Hey friends, I have been on this forum for quite awhile and I often see collectors starting threads about issues they have once they receive their coins. Some people are pleased and some send their coins back. This is a two-fold conversation here just for the sake of discussion. I'll get right to the questions, below. I don't want to answer number 1, because I've never received bad looking coins. But as far as saying something to the US Mint, I would say, 'why don't you intentionally and occasionally let some error coins go through completion and sell them. You wouldn't have to sell them separately, just throw them in the bag of coins that is being sold, quarters halves or whatever. It would be like a Cracker Jack prize for coin collectors! Anyway, what do you have to say to the Mint? Anyone? :thumb: 1. Have you ever returned your coins to the US Mint and why? 2. If you could say something to the US Mint, and they would listen to you and do something about it, what would it be?
Yes, I have returned coins due to scratches, spots, and planchet marks. If I could get the Mint to listen I'd tell them to be realistic with the prices of their products.
I've been lucky. I haven't had any problems that would prompt me to return a coin to the Mint. As far as letting the Mint know about my opinions, I do send them feedback through their website. But I think the best way to have the MInt listen is through coin club campaigns, petitions at shows, and the like.
Quite a few, if not the majority, do get through to the public. They don't have the staff to look through billions of coins. However, I'm sure the collectors who collect errors wouldn't want more to be purposefully turned lose, as it would take away value and rarity.
They really don't have any choice in the matter as their prices are dictated by law. Not an exact number mind you, but they have to make a profit by law. As far as the mint listening, they listen. They even read this forum.
The Spouse coins are about 40% defective. That is just unacceptable. When you charge $100+- over spot for a collectible item it should not have spots or scratches that are visible to the naked eye. The Franklin mint and other "collectible" manufacturers do not send out product with these problems why does the mint?
they may listen but they appear to be refusing to act on legit complaints. Spouse coins have a 40%+ defect rate- I have posted on this many many times and they just keep sending out defective coins.
I have been purchasing coins directly from the US Mint every year since I bought my first proof set in 1976. Those were the old days of purchasing everything with a check and the magnetic strip ordering card, quaint times when the only coins available were annual proof and uncirculated sets. Today, everything I buy is online. I keep track of new coin issues with the wish list feature and just click to buy the list periodically. I group my purchases to save on shipping costs. I have had the good fortune having never returned any set or coin. I did receive damaged original government packaging twice and it was replaced without an issue.
When you return an item they double charge your card and let the charge sit there for a week or two. This could incur one of those $35 overdraft charges if you do not know that they do this.
So who is it? Never mind. They have to kill you if you tell, right? It only makes sense. While the gravy's flowing our government wants to be right there with their kisser under the faucet. That's why there's policy (lottery) and their rake-offs on casino gambling. It makes sense they're watching the coin forums, as that's where their money is.

I returned a coin a few years back and was kinda p*ssed off when they did that. I called about it and was given some circular reasoning about why they do it. typical govt action I guess. still I only had 1 bad coin, so far.
I've never really had any product issues with the mint. But I also don't buy much from them. My only question would be why it takes three months to ship a product that is available and sitting in a distribution center? We can ship literally tens of millions of tons of freight across the country and back about 15 times on our trains in the time it takes them to ship a 15 oz package 1200 miles via third class mail. Amazing. Guy
