right now I store my proof sets in the original cardboard boxes they come in OGP in a shoebox in my room. Thinking of changing to put them in proof set storage boxes and put the boxes in like a Rubbermaid plastic storage box. do I need to store the sets in the cardboard boxes OGP?
That's an interesting question. I think they have more value in the original Mint packaging. But I also wonder about the coins toning inside the boxes. The new proof sets all come in the plastic holders, so that should protect them from toning. I have sets from 1999 when the quarter sets came out. I've checked these and all of my sets have no toning even though I've kept them in the original cardboard boxes. So I say keep them in the Mint boxes in the Rubbermaid storage box. The biggest factor is environmental control of the room they are kept in. Keep them in a room that has decent temperature control, like your bedroom, and most importantly, away from humidity. I live in a relatively dry area, so even though it gets hot, the humidity is always low. If you live in a place like Florida, though, you need to make sure the coins are always in a room where temperature and humidity are controlled throughout the year.
I will definatly get some plastic storage boxes prolly put some silica gel packs in there. I have them in bedroom closet temp is cool no real humidity. I have a 2009 proof set the Lincoln Cents are toning some but my other sets look good.
I don't even know how they pack todays sets but if you do what you've described with 80's and 90's sets I guarantee you they'll continue to tone. I think you could have close to 0% humidity and they'd still tone while in that packaging.
I wish I could recommend something. I think if you keep them in the original packaging it's inevitable.
I wrap all my sets in zip lock bags and then place them into proof set boxes. I get them from the coin wizzard for a pretty good price.
yea may store them out of the original packaging in the plastic storage boxes with gel packs but keep the original packaging stored in another box.
