I am not a Morgan dollar collector, so I was hoping to get some grade opinions on this 1881-O. It has some beautiful toning and big full cartwheel luster. Maybe PL? Thank you in advance.
Just a guess, I'm a noob the front looks perfect. No big nicks and not much wear. But there are some scratches. the back is just full of scratches 65 is my guess.
First off, she is one real beauty, but to answer your question my opinion of a good conservative grade for this piece would be a 64. However, I wouldn't go as far to classify this as PL. Just my two cents. :thumb: -Mike
Well, I'm a Barber guy, Jefferson Nickel guy and Mary Anne from Gilligans Island guy, but I'm thinking this Morgan is a strong 64.
Thanks guys. I am trying to make a decision on sending it in for grading. It's gotta be 64 or better to be worth the cost. So, I am still undecided lol.
It could be a 64, Greg. The reverse kind of makes it look more 63ish to me, but it is a pretty coin, with great toning. Probably not necessary to slab it, as it is a common date--just enjoy it for the beautiful colors. Hard to tell with a coin photograph with that much toning, but I tend to doubt PL--the reverse has nice reflectivity, but the obverse is hard to determine from a photo due to the colors.
It looks in the technical MS63 range to me but I wouldn't be surprised if they kicked it up one for their market for that outstanding color. That's one pretty girl.
Wow. Everyone gave some great opinions and feedback. I value them all and really appreciate it. As much as I would love it to be a 65, I know it is an unrealistic expectation. Morgans, with their bag marks and other idiosyncrasies have kept me from pretending I can grade them. This lady will stay the way she is in her raw form. Someone will hopefully enjoy her for the great eye appeal and colorful peraonality. Thanks again everyone. -greg
Looks better than 63 to me. 63 usually look like than wandered through a minefield. I would say strong 64. Since your images are great, I would think it would be worth sending in, as the TPG + your pics would make this a very easy sell above normal FMV IMHO.
Oh boy. Here goes. Based solely on what I see in the images, the toning looks artificial, maybe applied to mask the wear on the hair above the ear. The toning is splotchy and appears to sit on top of the surface, instead of being incorporated into the surface by a chemical reaction to the surface of the coin. AU/questionable color. IMO. IMO. IMO.
Well stinkycat, that's the thing with toners; It's all an opinion. Although I completely disagree with you (I think PCGS would too), I appreciate your comments.
MS 63 + easily CAC'ed sticker. Nice looking piece. Either way a a 63 or 64 I think it would fetch a premium due to the exquisite toning and in my personal experience and opinion I believe they wouldn't kick it out for questionable color.
