'71 Kennedy Proof DDO?

Let us try to attribute your 71S half dollar using the descriptions in the CONECA Master Listings which has 19 DDO listings.

First we can eliminate all of the ODV-002’s since yours is an ODV-003...leaving SDO-001, DDO-005, 006, 009, 010, 012, 015, 016 and 019. You half would not have a strong spread so we can eliminate the 005 and 006. Lets look at the doubling for the last 1 of date...when looking at your photos that show the last 1 of the date I see no doubling, maybe some MDD in a couple of you photos. So we can eliminate the 009, 010, 012, and 015...this leaves the 016 and 019. You can see in the descriptions that the 016 and 019 both have a spread on IN GOD WE TRUST. I see no doubling on IN GOD in your photos at all, except the bottom right of I in IN, which is on most all of the 71S proof ODV-003 ( Series doubling), and what looks like it might be some MDD. I would rule out the 016 and 019. What does that leave you with? My opinion is your half would be “too minor” to use a phrase from James Wiles.

I see a couple of options you might have if you don’t agree with this or you think it could be a new listing. Send the half to CONECA (Wiles), or NCADD (Wexler), for an attribution.

Thank you for laying out that elimination process for me. It's awesome how efficient your system is! And I don't want to sound like a donkey, or as if I'm being argumentative, but that leaves me with DDO-017 which you must have forgotten to include and is described as "Light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, date, and LIBERTY" Again, I thank you for your valuable insight and ask for a little patience as I learn from you and others here.

 

The problem with your half being the 71S DDO-017 is that the 017 is an ODV-002 and yours is a ODV-003.

Its Machine Damage Doubling coupled with Series Doubling.

I do not see any doubling other than Ejection Doubling (MDD).
