I have some regular proof sets from the 80s and early 90s have a few the coins are not real shiny kinda cloudy looking I only want really good quality in the proof sets I want in my collection. Should I sell these sets I don't really like? I'm thinking so and use toward more recent proof sets. thoughts?
Replacing them should be relatively reasonable price wise but why not think of keeping the older hazy sets and experimenting a bit with some acetone? You might be surprised with the results......
Selling sets you don't like and replacing them with sets you do like is always my first recommendation. As far as using acetone to remove haze, it's seldom effective. But you if you choose to go that route then get a product called MS70, it will remove haze.
And when you get the new sets get them out of their original packaging and into relatively environmentally stable storage unless you want to gamble on future toning. 2X2s in a safe with silica packets will slow down the speed of this hazing on your moderns. The "haze" used to drive me crazy too. No need to settle with moderns. Get rid of them and at a minimal, take the replacements out of their original packaging and into 2x2's. If you're dead set on keeping them in the original packaging than it's a roll of the dice.
Considering the low prices that these fetch, I would break the sets and use them to fit in holes in a coin album. I'm seeing them sell for as low as $5 a set at auctions.
