Hey all, I was given a bucket of change today and in my search I found this. Please tell me what you can about it. Thanks in advance!
You'll need to be more specific as to what you see that may be an error...I see some scratches on both sides as well as some general wear.
It's made from 90% silver and 10% copper. This would grade around VF20 with wear and scratches. Approximately seven and one quarter million of them were struck in that year. This one was made in the Philadelphia Mint. The only other mint which made this coin was the Orleans Mint. In this condition, it's retail value would be around $35. (I think he wants to post this under "What's it worth". There isn't anything I noticed to make it an error.)
Oh yeah sorry guys! I didn't mean to put this under errors... My bad.. Thank you for the info. Btw I also found 1907 and 1914 barber dimes.
Its also a small date 1857. Their also a few die varieties re punched date is the only one I can not see in photo. Damaged rev makes it a ungrade most Tpg Anacs would be who would grade it. But nice free bee!!!
I think what Jello is trying to say is that it would not receive a legitimate grade if you sent it to a 3rd party grading company, on account of the damage on the reverse. It still has value (although I couldn't tell you how much as I am not a half-dime expert). He is saying "nice freebee" because you didn't pay anything for it.
It would be good if you bought a grading book and some other coin books . I use ANAs 6th Edition for grading , and a good resource book is the annual Redbook . Learning to grade is one of the best things you can do for yourself and the Redbok has a wealth of knowledge and some info on every coin ever minted by the US mint , it also gives values but they're really only good as a rough estimate . I think you have a grade and value given in post #3 .
saltysam put a good price it so I didn't see a reason to change that.Anacs would grade it if there a re-punched date. But Ngc+Pcgs would just put Genuine. Here more info @ link. http://www.seateddimevarieties.com/registry/halfdimebusinessvariety_index.htm
