    Wouldn't the focal point change as the magnification changes? Maybe he cannot get the coin into clear focus based on the distance of the microscope to the coin. The units with higher resolution usually offer higher power.

    It seems like it would be easier to just look at the piece in-hand to determine if you had interest, but the fact that you might take images to review later is certainly useful (as long as the dealer does not mind).
