What will the design be on this one?

Any plans to change the designs on other coins besides the quarter and nickel?

Here are the latest press releases from the Mint:

I heard talk, here while back, about changing the "golden dollar" to a presidential series. So far, no word on whether they will go through with it.

Although it probably will never happen, I would love to see a return to the flowing hair type or bust type liberty on any type coin. I think it's going to be tough to get off the "dead presidents", though. I miss the older designs that were so pretty. Just my two cents worth. :)

Wasn't the presidential series going to follow the statehood quarter series, starting with Washigton and progressing thru according to their term?

New designs for the 2005 nickel

Ive just registered here, though I've been a member of the PCGS board for some time and have been a collector for 43 years.
As to the new design, I certainly hope they choose the Buffalo and Bear designs, as recommended by the Committee on Fine arts. It would be great to have a Neo Buffalo nickel (of course, I'm partial to the original Buffalo nickel-it's my favorite.)
I hope they keep the Sac dollar-we have enough presidents on our coinage already.

Here, here! I'm tired of dead presidents. And welcome to the forum :)

Sorry, but to classify Washington and Jefferson as "dead presidents" is a bit irresponsible.
Would we refer to Charles Lindburgh as a dead pilot?
Paul Revere, a dead horse-back rider? Christopher Columbus, a dead sailor? Pocahantas, a dead Indian? Daniel Boone, a dead bear hunter? The Savior, a dead preacher? :(
Of course not. These people deserve to be respected more than that.
Young people need to know the risks and sacrifices that our Founding Fathers made, in order to create the greatest nation on earth. :)
Now, saying that you don't like historical figures on coinage is perfectly understandable. That would be an opinion without the comment that could be misinterpreted.
Look at it this way. Is Liberty a mythical Amazon fresh from a toga party? Is the Bald Eagle a feathered carrion-eating critter?

Now, the other three guys on US coins probably fit nicely into that category. ;)

(This is just my observation, and not meant to be personal or disrespectful towards anyone) :)

    Jody,

No matter how much we disagree on design concepts, I absolutely admire your passion sir. I wish more collectors would take the time to look past the static design to see what they represent. You are correct that the image of these great men represent more than their single lives.
Now if I could only get you over to the "other" side :D

It was my understanding that both the Obverse and reverse of the '05 nickel would be new. It would still have Jefferson, just a different "view".

I don't think the "dead Presidents" term is used with any disrespect in this context. It's a commonly used term for those who think a presidential image on our coinage is overused a bit.

    And, thanks for the welcome!

Sorry, Jody. It wasn't meant to be disrespectful. It was a comment on the coin design only and certainly not intended to belittle the great people who gave us this country. :)

    No need to apologize, Susan.

If you had been here for a while, you would have known how I am.

I will read about a dozen posts on coinage designs and dead presidents, and never say a word.

When I can't stand to bite my tongue any longer, I let my opinion be known. It not only makes me feel better, but I believe it lets everyone know that there is usually more than one way to look at things.

I would never question your patriotism, my friend. :)

    Your point is well taken.
Please don't let my apparant rudeness spoil your impression of this forum.
I can assure you that you are indeed very welcome here, and speaking for myself, I look forward to having you join in with us on as many threads as you can.
Please accept my sincere appology. I was wrong.

You know what, though? It kind of reminds me of the welcome I got when I first started posting on the CU board. :D

While I'm as patriotic as anyone. I would like to see some new designs for coins.. The concept Dollar and the Jefferson image above are certainly both very nice designs..

I do love the Flowing Hair designs of some of the very early coins though..

Well, here are the new Jeff Nickel Designs for 2005, as posted in CoinWorld.com:

    http://www.coinworld.com/news/092704/jefferson.asp

I like having the buffalo back, but I wish they used the old fave from 1913-38. The one here looks looks rather flat. The other design -- different, but I'm not too crazy about it.

Word is the 2006 and later Jeffs will have a re-designed Jeff bust and Monticello. The original Schlag pattern design would be nice (like the copies being sold by the Full Step Nickel Club).

    I like it!

Not only do I like the new design, I'm happy to see these changes come about even if they do nothing but bring awareness back to our coinage and the people who are represented on them. I guess after so long of a time, the older designs become a little 'stale'. Kinda like when you first see one of the new $20.00 bills in your hand and you actually stop and take a look at it. Now how about bringing back a large cent coin???
