To be fair, this is a weakly struck overton variety, as in the motto E Pluribus Unum and the dentils being gone. There's a NGC AU50 star, rainbow toned, of the same overton (I believe) on eBay. It too is struck similarly to the OP ANACS coin, but is substantially stronger than the anacs one IMO. The NGC one is still pushing it for an AU IMO, but stronger nonetheless.

I consistently see all the TPG get grades wrong, ANACS undergrades and overgrades so its a ying and a yang

If this is only reason number 453 not to buy ANACS graded coins then you should hop over to the other side of the fence. I have made 1000's of dollars by crossing over ANACS and ICG coins to PCGS.

Clearly we can all see that this coin OP posted is not an AU50 coin though the strike is clearly soft and the coin probably grades higher then VF. This is a coin I would skip as I doubt it would cross. Putting all your eggs in the PCGS basket though will be just as costly in the long run by way of lost profits and rising grading fees.

Here is one great example of buy the coin and not the slab. I would also like to note that this coin has passed CAC standards too. (feel free to run the serial though CAC).

Now I am not saying that every ANACS/ICG/NGC is going to cross but the only legitimate reason to skip an ANACS or ICG coin is one that is incorrectly graded....... not to just avoid every coin not in a PCGS holder.

IMO... The TPG services follow in this order from best to worst. My Eyes..lol, NGC, PCGS, ICG, and then maybe ANACS.

Yeah, I once bought a 1807 50/20 capped half in ANACS XF40 small white holder for $800 and it crossed to PCGS XF40. I made a few hundred bucks on the resale. I tend to put my faith in the ANACS old white holders more than the yellow and especially blue. But you're right, it's a mixed bag...inconsistent. My buddy bought an ANACS blue holder 181.7 punctuated date XF45 and it crossed to NGC as VF35. He was upset about that one.

Thank you for the kind words there vam. That was a pretty one :)

All ANACS and ICG holders can contain potential gold (not literally although they can have that too lol). The biggest problem people don't seem to understand is that many of these coins get cracked out or crossed over. So many times when ICG/ANACS coins end up for sale (especially in the largest auctions and big dealers) they tend to be the coins that would not cross to a PCGS holder. If you can find them fresh from a collector though you might find a nice one. You just have to know where to look.
