I have been dying to buy one of these also, are these getting more popular because I want one? My desire has been going on for a year or so

Are you referring to high denomination notes like the $500 Federal Reserve Note?

Yes, they are very popular. Prices have been on the rise for the last few decades and are still climbing. You can still get a low-grade note for under $700. But they're going up quick. I've seen prices rise by about 10% over the last 2 years.

Your best bet is to go for a 1934 or 1934A series, with a darker green seal like the image above. Light (lime) green seals cost more. New York (B) and Chicago (G) districts are the more common issues and will cost less than others.

Wish we still made the 500s, along with 1000s!

But they'd cause us to lose even more value to counterfeiters I guess..

I really like metal certs... that long narrative beginning with "This certifies..." and ending with "...on demand".
    Those were the days!

Too bad there are no small size high denomination silver certs. There are gorgeous large size ones:

Then we got these gorgeous Legal Tenders:

So much of a difference between those two notes in terms of history and economic change. But on the note, just a simple change of color, and a new term, FRN. Those two pieces are made to be shown together.

I'm looking to buy one still but eBay is annoying me. Does anyone have any leads on private sales to keep the price down? I'm sure the sellers fees make up most of the inflated price. Also where can I find a condition scale so I can make my own assessment.

Your best bet to get it cheap are no-reserve auctions, which end during an unusual hour (like the middle of the night). Finding a Buy-It-Now listing at a low price on eBay will be hard. It does happen, however.

I would also check out other auction sites like ha.com, stacksbowers.com and lynknight.com. You can find some deals on there. Unfortunately selling and buying high denomination currency is costly, because buyer/seller premiums are assessed on the face value as well.

You can check out private dealers, through the PCGS or PMG websites dealer pages. One private dealer that I have had a good experience with is actioncurrency.com as well. You could also try brick-and-mortar coin shops too. They often have high denomination notes as well.

    Good luck!
