I'm a junky

I'm a coin junky and not afraid to admit it. I collect every coin I get in change, buy from EBay or from the mint.
My problem is I have too much invested in just junk coins. I primarily stick to mint coins at the present, but what do I do with the excess junk coins that I may or may not have paid a premium for in the past ?

Use the 'old junk' to buy 'new junk'.......

Spend the junk change - it's only worth face value. If you've got junk silver, sell it in medium-sized lots on eBay. If you've got junk foreign, sell it in large lots, by the pound. Keep the money from the sales in your Paypal account, and use it to buy worthwhile coins.

thats literally what I am doing myself. trying to sell things that have no real value to me, just general accumulation and trying to sell if for a nicer coin i want. seems to be the general activity behind most coin collectors. Move the stuff that you dont want for the things that you do.

It's a good idea to start early. Over the years the junk stuff can get out of hand.

Something to remember is that just because you may have paid a premium for some items(like US mint products), the market may have changed and you will either have to take a loss, or hold on to them. Coin collecting seems to be one of the few hobbies where people seem to expect to get back what they paid or more when they sell. Would be nice, but not always the case. If you have stuff that you are now considering junk, do your research and find out what the going FMV is and shoot for that. Then at least you can use that money to help finance future purchases. The theory is that the longer you collect, and the smarter you become, the more likely you are to make purchases that will be more beneficial/financially prudent, than you did when you were new and just bought the stuff that was cool, or neat. Good luck.

I'm sorry. We're not a rehabilitation center. You need to get serious help.

Depending on you junk :), if there are any local coin stores or coin shows it might be worth while to take some along and trade for a much nicer coin(s). Make sure to decide on a reasonable value of your coins before engaging a trade...

All valid answers, but my problem is, is that I can't seem to let anything go. Addiction is a habit that can't be broken and I am addicted.

You could build a junk coin sculpture to pay tribute to your not so junky coins. Every house needs some coin art on display.

Start coin books, older dates-2013 pennies, dimes, nickels, and quarters. Any change you get, go through it and see if you have that date yet, if you don't then put it in the book, if you do then put it in a jar or in your wallet or etc. to spend it and just keep doing that until you have full books! That's what i am doing and it is really fun, going through all of the change you get from purchases at the end of each week, being able to put some in books and being able to spend some. it is a lot more fun than it just sitting there, and if you just CAN'T get rid of any of it and do start books and have duplicates, get multiple of the same books, and keep them in a book shelf. Do that and watch the coin books fill up! :)

(that is, if your coins are the more modern ones i.e. Lincolns, Roosevelts, Jeffersons, and Washingtons)

P.S. I highly recommend the H.E. Harris & Co. Coin Folders, it is easy to push the coins in without being too easy so they don't fall out. Plus they have pictures of the coin it is for all over the outside and i think that makes it cooler and more interesting of a folder

sell half the "junk" to buy a coin you will want to show off. you will be so much happier with better grade coins. but if all you can afford is cheaper coins can be fun too.

Keep it all...you already have it, chances are you will take a loss if you sell it now.

As we get older (and hopefully smarter :)) we sometimes lose interest in coins that were purchased years earlier. The pleasure and joy that they formerly brought us has (possibly?) faded in our minds as new horizons in numismatics are explored and and specializations to key areas within the hobby are made. Sometimes, hard decisions are made with regard to earlier purchases, and we make the tough choice have having to let some of our collection go and very often it will go for less than what we paid for it. Still, the loss incurred is more than made up for with the excitement and new interests that we pursue............:)
