So I have tried to attribute this 1883 Indian Head Cent. It does not appear to match up to any of Snow's varieties in his attribution guide. It has a defective digit punch on the "3", but the three also appears to be repunched in the lower portion of the 3. If you have an attribution guide, can you help me confirm what I am seeing here? Thanks!
Nice looking coin - may I ask what is the grade? I have Rick Snows book - on PR1 1883 3/3 it says minor repunching at top of 3. This repunching shows up on other dies and is defective digit punch. So there are several varities that list this defective digit punch. Now the S-5 reads like the rarer of the bunch and could be mishandled proofs. So what do the corners of the shield - connected to denticles or not? A catch all looks like S-4 - this is a multiple listing for any coin with the broken digit punch and without any other variety.
Thanks for the reply Mark, This coin is way undergraded at MS64BN. To me, it looks every bit of an MS66. Luster is off the charts. I looked at all the varieties you mentioned, but this is different with pretty bold repunching on the bottom inside loop in 3. I emailed Rick Snow the pics and will be sending him the coin tomorrow. Ill let you know what he says about it. Heres one last pic of just the 3
I thought about that, but there is no other visible sign of Longacre doubling by the date. It is pretty bold whatever it is.
