My Dad has a 1861 Filipinas gold coin 4p. I was trying to find the value for him, but I can't even find the coin. I've found some in different years and different amounts, but not this coin. Have any of you ever seen it? Do you know what it's worth? My Dad has had it since 1970 and no one has ever been able to place a value on it or even find it in a book. Can you help me? Chelsea The picture isn't the exact coin. It's a 4p piece from 1868. Ours is alittle more worn, but other than that and the date is the same. I miss typed the date is not the same it's 1861. Sorry abou that, just having a night.
Welcome to CoinTalk Nightfillie. Do you have a picture of this coin that you could post. It would make it easier to ID.
I'm still researching - but I did find out your gold coin is from Spain. Here is a link to a site to give you some Spanish background. I'm still looking for the exact coin. http://americanhistory.si.edu/csr/nnc/spain/spain.htm
Okay - here it is: Your coin is a 4 Pesos gold piece from the last year of Isabel II's reign. Isabel was forced to abdicate to her son in 1868. There is one selling on eBay right now that is at $143.50 with 2 days left to go. The item no. is 392667370 if you want to look at it. It looks to be in about the same condition as yours. Hope this helps.
Howdy nightfillie - Welcome to the Forum !! Sorry Susan - it's not from Spain. The coin was issued in the Philippines. It is as you said a 4 peso and was struck in .875 gold with an actual gold weight of .1903 oz. Values are as listed in Krause - F - $120 VF - $175 XF - $245 and UNC - $475. The coin in the pic is XF+ if not UNC - so if your coin is only slightly more worn - then it is XF. If you can post a pic of the actual coin I would be happy to provide a better estimate.
You just keep right on tryin little lady. We'll make a darksider outta you yet But get yourself a set of the Krause catalogs
Let me add my welcome, nightfillie. Don't feel bad Susan. Many Spanish colonials were struck using the same designs as home country coins and it isn't hard to get them mixed up. BTW it's KM#144.
I have 1 Krause and it's the 1901-now. I'm looking for the 1800-1900. Because I don't have that one, I had to try to find it the hard way and the internet is not always all that it's cracked up to be.
Oh they're easy enough to find - as long as you want new ones - Krause Used copies on the other hand can be a bit more difficult. But between Amazon and ebay - you can a get a full set of used copies in a couple of weeks
The last 4 times I checked Amazon they were out of it (and the Cherrypicker's Guide 4th Edition). I check 2-3 times a week. Eventually, I'll get it. If I get the money before they get a used copy, I'll buy new. It's driving me crazy not having it.
I had to special order my 1801-1900 cat. from Barnes and Noble - I have no doubts that I paid a large retail premium, but I feel like I have never made better purchases, if if I did over-pay a slight.
I got my 1901-Present Krause brand new also from Barnes & Noble. Definitely one of the best purchases I ever made, but I'm trying to avoid that retail price again. I have at least 4 other books that I still need and the Krause catalog new price is enough to cover 3 of them. But it is a must if you even dabble in the darkside.
i got my 1901-- for 27 pounds free delivery new from amazon uk beats the 39.99 list price +postage i realy feel the need for the 1801--- its my next book purchase
http://www.jakesmp.net/CSD_Books/CSD_Bks_080_M.html found there for 40usd i think the postage to uk will be too much but for usa people seems a bargain to me
