Hi everyone, I've recently gotten back into coins and always wanted to get into U.S. currency (not really modern so much) but had no idea where to start. After reading some of the posts here, I was wondering if there were favorites people had? Looking to start inexpensively but not throwing money away on garbage. I realize this is asking more than I think, but any help would be appreciated
Sweet. I'll poke around, wasn't even thinking silver certs. As a random question, I'm guessing paper has similar third party grading as does coins?
You're correct. Very similar when it comes to TPG. Of course the best services are PMG and PCGS Currency. I personally prefer PMG myself. Happy collecting!
All 1928 gold certificates with the gold seal, these are 1 year issue notes. You can find some decent notes on ebay in the circulated grades, I try to buy the ones that are nicely centered and have a nice white color.
Another great source for notes both graded and raw is, Coast to Coast Coins. It takes a little to figure out how to navigate his web-site but he has some very nice notes.
Will definitely check it out, thanks for the suggestion! Will take a look at those as well, thanks! Seems like I need to do my homework, thanks for all the great info.
Most of the notes listed are going to be pricey. Gold certificates and large size notes in decent shape (VF or better) will run you 3 figures and up. I got my start with small size silver certificates and legal tender notes. 1935/1957 $1 Silver Certificates, 1934/1953 $5 & $10 Silver Certificates, 1928/1953/1963 $2 & $5 Legal Tender notes are probably a good place to start without spending a whole lot.
Thank you. I need to find a couple more myself. I'm trying to fit a CU note in the budget... I'll post it when I pick her up.
I have probably 8 of the 1928 golds on ebay right now. Highest grade is a 1928 $10 in a 58 PPQ, lowest grade that I have is 1 circulated $10. I finally bought 2 -1928 gold certificates this year in the 64 grade a $10 and a $20 this was a scary purchase for me if you know what I mean.
You might want to think about obsoletes ramedog. I collect mostly NJ obsolete banknotes and private scrip, but "lose control" once in awhile and pick up some Civil War or fractional paper. The history on these notes is fantastic. I also do some research on most everything I buy for some added fun. Bruce
