hello, i am not new here, though i have been away for quite a while. well now im back and wanting to get back into collecting im british and like my history (and therefore particularly british history), so i thought id post here for some recommendations. im thinking around the £20-£50 mark (read from ebay). i already have some constantine coins which i consider good grade (by my eyes- im no expert) for the price i paid. i am keen to get my hands on some hammered coins though i know all but a few low grades are out of my price range im more into the 'interest' factor of collecting, im not interested in a coins value or future value. i particularly like error coins, but that obviously doesnt help in the reccomendations. i also like east india company coins. thanks rich
hey John Anthony, thanks for replying. i have not. the only roman coins i have were from a dealer in my area. i intend to expand on that collection. thanks for the reccomendation. i did a bit of a search -very interesting. ive wanted to collect from a specific mint for a while rich
Well, Londinium mint Roman Bronze is very popular among British collectors, for obvious reasons. Here is a page of coins for sale on vcoins, but keep in mind that dealers on vcoins are asking the highest possible price they can get for their inventory. I rarely buy anything off the site without making a lower offer first. https://www.vcoins.com/en/Search.as...ype=0&searchMaxRecords=100&SearchOnSale=False
thanks for the link. am i correct in thinking they can be indentified from the 'LON' mark? thanks rich
It depends on the era and emperor. Londinium mint marks can be any of the following: L, LI, LN, LON, ML, MLL. MLN, MSL, PLN, PLON, AVG, AVGOB, AVGPS
There are lots of cool English coins to collect over there. I like the English pennies. I have some that go back to the 1730's and even found one over here in the "junk world coins" bin.
Ancients minted at London or Camulodunum (Colshester) have very distinctive portrait styles. IMHO they are some of the best styled along with coins from Treveri (Trier).
Collect what YOU like. Consider collecting coins that were manufactured in Great Britain for use outside of England (much like the East India Company coins mentioned). You might limit the collection to coins made at the mint of the East India Company, the Royal Mint in London, and the Heaton Mint in Birmingham. You could assemble a wild World type coin collection including coins that circulated in dozens of places including Canada, India, Ceylon, etc. Post some photos when you can. :smile
thanks for the tips guys, i appreciate it. i am going on an ebay hunt for when i can add to my collection. i would love to pick up some coins that were minted in the north of england where i live (nearest city carlisle). after some research i understand that there was a mint there, at least around medieval era rich
Red Copper This is an inexpensive Copper ¼ Anna dated 1858. It was issued by the East India Company. It was minted by J. Watt & Sons, Birmingham England. The KM number is 463.1 The East India Company issued many million of these Copper coins dated 1858. The coins with one leaf at the wreath tip were made by J. Watt & Sons. The coins with double leaf tips were apparently made by Ralph Heaton & Sons in Birmingham.
How about Half penny tokens ? I have a little collection of tokens showing navel motivs, reflecting my great passion for Patrick O Brian
