I can see day light all around the coin a lot of day light I have heard of putting a shim around the coin but there is a lot of day light anyone have an idea on how to fix this?

I have the same problem (actually I think I even have the exact same year/condtion you have!).

I am interested in solutions as well.

Do you show a lot of day light looks like the coin will just move to the other hole?

I think you can email Dansco and they will send you a shim. Or just make one of your own out of a strip of the clear plastic that is used for the slides that cover the coins. It works very well.;)

the whole dansco series for the large cents are that way. I have close to a full set of large cents VF+ and all of them have the daylight issue. I think they used the same stamp as they used for the halve dollar? It is a problem and Dansco dont seem to care.

No, Dansco cares, that why they offer the free shims. The problem is that the coins came in so many different sizes, the planchets were not all the same. Not really anything Dansco has any control over.

    Becky,
When you made your shim, did you just shim one side of the coin so it would fit tight or did you make a shim to go all around the coin so it would be centered in the hole ?

Many of the coins seem to have that issue (it's not the only one) and I mickey-moused a plastic spring that works OK, but is a pain to make and get it all in. A better (but not clear) solution might be to use some of the foam (ceneters) that come with the airtites (sometimes you have to make the ring by punching out the center. My luck with using those hasn't been all that much better (plus it's white so maybe it would look horrible).

    Becky,

Can you give us the email address for Dansco to get these free shims? It would be really great to keep that cent from rolling around in my 7070.

I have an old ad (so old there is no web page noted) from Dansco, August, 2002, so (hopefully) the address is still the same:
    4313 W. Jefferson Blvd.
    Los Angeles, CA 90016

    Telephone: (323)734-6373
    Fax: (323) 734-2310

    Good luck.

Dansco doesn't care. I have spoken to them several times in the last two years, AND THEY COULD CARE LESS ABOUT MAKING CHANGES. I have a 7070 and my large cents fit tight. They just do. I have an 1827 & 1846 in there.

One of the coins was so small I put in 2 shims (all the way around). It keeps them from spinning, I hated that. You will be surprised at how well it works....quick and easy.:)

Thanks for adding the address Frank.

I don't think it's a matter of not caring. The reality is, there is no one size that would work for those years. Mine are too loose, yours are too tight. It would be nice if the holes were actually more along the lines of the airtite spongy foam so there'd be a bit of wiggle room.

samjimmy is right. You can't make a hole that will work for all the coins of that type. The Coronet cent ran from 1816 to 1839. Until 1836 they used an open collar that did not restrain the expansion of the planchet during the striking with the result that every coin is a slightly different size. rom 1836 on they used a close collar that did restrain the expansion rsulting in better fill of the dies and every coins being perfectly round and exactly the same diameter. But since they were restrained they are also slightly smaller in diameter that the earlier coins. So if Dansco makes the hole to fit the 1836 - 39 coins the earlier coins won't fit at all. So they moke it slightly large and it fits all the earlier coins pretty well, but is too big for the 36 - 39 coins.

If the 7070 had a hole for the Liberty cap cents it would have the same problem. The comression the lettered edge planchets of 1793 - 95 makes them start out with a smaller diameter than the plain edged 1795-96 coins. So even though they used an open collar and all the coins are slightly different size, the lettered coins are always smaller than the plain edge coins. So a hole that fits one will not fit the other.
