I'm trying to identify this coin. I'm sure it's from the Ottoman Empire/Turkey, and I have the date as 1223 (26), which I translate to 1834, though I could be wrong on how that works out. The main problem is that all the coins listed in Krause are silver, and this doesn't look silver to me. The coin is about the size of a U.S. dollar and doesn't really even fit in the $1 2x2. There are several coins in Krause that look like the one I have, but as I said, they are all silver, and I can't find a denomination listed on my coin. Any help?
It looks like a silver Ottoman 5 Kurush/Piastres coin, diameter 40mm, weight around 16 grams. These were less than 50% silver which may account for how your coin looks. I have some South African 50% silver coins which look just as dark.
Turkey coin looks like: KM#599 5 Kurush-denomination, .1700 silver , weight varies 13.00-16.00 grams. date 1223/26 values: VG-$4.00 F-$7.00 VF-$12.50 XF-$25.00 if I were to guess a grade maybe a VF-XF leaning towards XF. interesting coin. nice find. old silver coins turn dark grey.
Thanks for the help. I was thinking maybe it was a 5 kurush too. I thought it was neat too. It was listed on eBay as "unknown Middle Eastern coin" and I was the only bidder for 99 cents. I've never seen one like it before.
