I found a 1957 quarter on the ground a few days ago, and I found a 1948 dime in my pocket a few months. I know this is pretty rare, but can anyone give me some statistics? You know, x out of x quarters are silver, x out of x dimes are silver?

While searching rolls of dimes i average around 1 per box. There is 2500 dimes per box. Quarters you arn't so lucky. I don't have any statistics but i know you'd probably have to search a lot of boxes just to find one.

My kids recently found a 1953 25c at Hannaford (grocery store) on the ground near a coin counter machine. They knew it was silver and they were very excited. I taught them well.

I have a better chance of finding silver quarters in change than finding them in rolls. I don't bother with rolls of quarters. I find about 1 silver dime for every $150 searched. I search mostly CRW from my various credit unions. I generally find about 1 war nickel in each box, but have found as many as 14 in one box.

Your best bet is to find them around CoinStar machines, which usually reject them. Seems like a lot of people have decided that if CoinStar won't take it, it must not be money.
