Since it's been very quiet around here for a couple of days, I thought I'd show one of my newer acquisitions. It is a Q. Sicinius and C. Coponius Denarius. 49 BC. Mint in the east moving with Pompey. An interesting coin minted by Moneyer Q. Sicinius circa 49 BC. It was minted to honor Pompey the Great and his party. The reverse design features a caduceus, palm branch and wreath. The caduceus stood for the restoration of trade after Pompey's defeat of the pirates. The palm branch was for Pompey's many victories. And the wreath represented a golden chaplet presented to Pompey by the people of Rome. An interesting example loaded with historical references.

    Q. SICINIUS AR Denarius
OBV: FORT P.R, diademed head of Fortuna right
REV: Q. SICINIVS below, III. VIR across field, caduceus and palm in saltire, laurel wreath above
Military Mint traveling East with Pompey, 49 BC
    3.64g, 17mm
    CR 440/1; Sicinia 5

Another great acquisition, Bing. You've become the expert on RRs round these parts.

I don't know about "expert", but, at the moment, RR's have become a focus for me.

The dealer I buy most from at shows commented that Republicans were going up in price lately more than most coins. It must be your fault, Bing. Cut it out!

Seriously, there are quite a few Republican types that are more interesting than the standard Roma/chariot ones but reasonable in mid grade. If you get interested in the bronzes (I have not), the number of versions skyrockets.

Not because of me. I buy the ones I can afford which means the lower end pricing. And you are correct. There are a ton of nice RR's with interesting reverses other than the racing bigas.

Now Bing, I asked you nicely, please do not corner the market on fly RR coins.

On top of it, I am running out of cool and witty things to reply to them....so with that being said....

    ummmm.....thats....phat!

Thanks for the kind comments. I love these RR coins that I'm able to get the history behind the coin. Sometime though I think I put too much information in the threads here on CT. I'll try to limit myself.

    And why should I stop?

    It is Phat, isn't it.

Why? If someone prefers not to read it they can just move along. If coins don't open the door to history and philosophy, then we're collecting nothing more than baubles, like cats accumulating shiny bits of junk under the bed. I'm particularly interested in this denarius of Pompey marching East, as he plays a pivotal role in the history of the region that most interests me.

If you put limits on the info you provide then you do us all a disservice. I particularly would like to know what I am drooling over.

Not to mention there is a dozen guys here who hang on to your every post, and truly appreciate your continued active contribution this hobby.
I personally may not have the time or the words to comment on every post, but I always let the the person know when something is Phat!

OK, ok. I was just testing the waters to see if I was posting too much info. I find the historical information fascinating and I'm glad all of you do as well.
