Reference guides and grading descriptions are a great place to start, but in the end, becoming good at grading a particular series takes looking at hundreds to thousands of coins.

I know, the engineer in me says "reference books" would help... the old engineer in me says it all about experience.

Yep, its both. Generally, ya gotta start with book foundation, then build expertise through practice.

The tough part of grading guides is that it is difficult to show the difference between high end AU's and unc.

Also, difficult to show cleaning marks.
