So I took a little bit of my eBay proceeds and bought 5lbs of world coins. Spent $44.70 for 5lbs. Another seller had 5lbs for $40, but it sounded like he picked through them pretty good. If there are 100 to a pound, then I spent about 9 cents a coin. It's going to be fun to sort through them. I will update this thread once they arrive with what I find.
Ive still never bought workd coins by the pound. I always feel they are picked through and will be junk. I dont like having piles of coins I know I wont enjoy.
well what ever coins he dont keep can be resold for more then 9 cents i would ether put them on ebay or listia
by the pound is a crap shoot. usually picked thru for the good stuff (silver) then they (sellers)dump what they know is super common on unsupecting buyers. you are ok if that is what you are looking for. but you are better off buying countries 1 by 1 you will get better grades. but if you are just curious about seeing some cheap foreign world coins then it's ok to buy by the pound.
please post what you find. I have done this a few times but found the lots filled with small denomination virtually worthless coins, plus some decent ones too, but by and large just a lot of stuff nobody wants and you are the stuckee.
to make your 9 cents back on Ebay, the coin would need to sell for roughly 1.13 assuming .60 cents for shipping. at that price you would break even. Most foreign coins bought in bulk are not worth that
I agree. Its POSSIBLE to get good groups, I would say most are like this. Even if you know what to look for, pounds of world coins are dicey. I have bought both great groups, and groups of crud.
I will post some more updates later. I got everything sorted. The group on the left is all the coins 1959 and before. The middle is 1960+, and the right group is a bunch of aluminum coins from Brazil. The bottom group is a mix of large diameter coins. I had fun sorting them out. Didn't find anything of big value, except for one Iran coin that may be silver (still waiting to find out).
I appreciate the post. Have often thought about buying a pound or more for the kids. Don't even care if there's nothing particularly valuable, but would be disappointed if there was nothing interesting to look at...like some that are AU, various countries, etc.
I bought a 50-pound bag several years ago and had hours (literally days) or pure enjoyment. I hope you have the same experience!
If you are referring to the two (2) Muhammad Reza, Pahlavi Shah coins posted in the other thread, they are made of Copper-Nickel.
A few other coins that are not worth much at all, but kind of cool looking. Also, what is the coin, 2nd from the top?
It looks like a Nepal coin. Possibly a 1 Rupee. Do you have a Krause to look it up or would you like me to do it?
I am actually surprized to see such a nice change with coins I have not seen before. you got lucky this time. continue the search.
