Hello there, I am a new member here but a reader for quite a bit. I recently purchased a 1981 US Mint Proof set, in which I believe that 3 out of the 6 coins are type 2. They are still in the original us mint case, but unfortunately they have a little staining to them due to the case not being sealed properly.

Are they type 2s, which I feel pretty strongly they are, definitely the SBA, after comparing to many pics across the web, as well as physically comparing to other 1981 type 1s. I took a picture with my 60x loupe of each coin for you guys to see.

How much is the set worth in the case, being the few are type 2s? Would it be worth more to crack them open and sell individually? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Now for the photos: The first 2 links are the SBA. The 3rd link is the quarter. The 4th link is the nickel. The 5th link is the penny. The 6th is the dime. And the last link is the half dollar. Sorry if you have to rotate them to see, I took them with my HD cam on my cell phone, and am posting from my phone as well. The pictures are high res so you can zoom pretty good.

Any info and all opinions are more than welcome. Thanks so much for helping, and I hope the SBA is type 2. This would be my first huge find since I started collecting. Thanks again. Joe.

P.S. I hope I didnt post this in the wrong category, if I did, please feel free to move it so I dont lose it, it took forever to type this up on a cell phone lol.

I'd say yes on the SBA and the quarter. No on the cent, dime and half. Can't access the nickel. My marker is to turn the "S" into a dollar sign (i.e., bisect the "S" through the long axis of the letter). If the highest point of the upper loop is to the right of the line, its type 2. If the highpoint is to the left of the line, its type 1.

    have fun,

I uploaded the new picture of the nickel, does anyone have any other thoughts on the nickel and the rest of the set?

I am curious to know how much the set would be worth if sold in the original mint case with 3 out of 6 coins being type 2... Around 225-250 perhaps?

Yeah but if you look around, ngc, pcgs, etc coins that are type 2, you find different variations in most of them, they arent that clear every time. The S on my SBA does not have the 15 degree cut off flat angle on the bottom of it, like the type 1s have, and also the middle curve is almost flat, like other type 2s.

Thanks, that is what I had been thinking as well about the nickel. Any other opinions on the SBA? I think there is very little evidence that the SBA is type 1.. it even has the more oval shaped ends, like I have saw.

No other opinions or comments? All these views and members, and 100 people constantly viewing... Did I accidentally post this thread in the wrong category or something? I hope people just dont think I joined and posted just for this, and am using people here and then gonna take off... I plan to be a very active member, I just started coin collecting a couple months ago, so I am still a little new to it all. Thanks for any more input....

Can you explain exactly why please? If you only compare it to the link you provided, of course it would be at type 1. But if you look around at pcgs and ngc cert type 2 SBAs they come in many different looking varieties, etc. The flat rounded bottom of my SBA looks soooo type 2 to me... btw you did zoom real far in on it right?(not calling you an idiot, just making sure you are looking at the same thing I am, I zoomed the pic in a bunch just to inspect more)

By the way I can also take other pictures if needed, or maybe I should just scan the whole set at max DPI and post. What is the best way for analytical purposes?

I based my assessment on the link I provided and yes, I did zoom in the coin pics......what da ya think me? An idiot?

I'll do some poking over at NGC. I'm surprised the experts on these haven't checked in yet. Maybe if we keep bumping this thread they'll see it.......:)

Definitely not taking anyone here as an idiot :). And I also agree, I am surprised no experts on type 1 and 2s havent checked in yet.

Here is a perfect example of an ebay auction showing one of the examples of how they can look, they are extremely reputable as well. Take a look at the picture where they show the type 1 and type 2, I would say mine is extremely close to type 2 based on the picture of the type 2 they have(which would be the one they are selling, and it is already up to $100).

Now I'm leaning toward type II for you.........

Thank you, I had been leaning toward that the whole time, I really respect your opinion and your repeated input. I am now officially thinking that I have 3 out of 6, in the mint case, that are type 2. This is great, I am going to try to auction it this week, as is, depending on more input if there is any. Judging on the amount of views on this thread and no "There is no way that is a type 2", type responses... I am having high hopes... This is such a wonderful find for me, I am still on the fence with keeping it for collector reasons... Such a rare find... thanks for all of your inputs and views, I look forward to any more input, as this has literally thrown gasoline on a passionate fire that was already starting. Thanks.

Ok, I have put it up for auction on ebay, if anyone is interested. I will put the link in the thread in the for sale forum where it properly belongs. Thanks for all the info guys.

the SBA is a type II, but the cloudiness is not going to make it easy to sell.

This is why so many were busted up. The coins in this set need a good dip and they will look deep cameo again. The SBA is the only coin worth a good premium of the 3 in this set, but as cloudy as it is, I doubt you'll get top dollar for it
