I have had this coin for about 2 years and have tried several times to attribute the coin to a reference. I have seen many Illyrian drachms and they all look very similar with different legends and different numbers of rays in the reverse geometric pattern. I have seen quite a few for sale, in past sales and posted by others across every coin forum. These coins seem to be very abundant as of late. I bought this coin on the bay for like $20 attributed only to Illyria. I do not own a good reference for these coins, and have failed to find an online match to my coin. So I can only provide you the information I can get off the coin, and from my limited exposure. The coin was minted while the Illyrian tribes were acting as a Protectorate of Rome.I know the city is correct from the legend and the direction of the cow. Otherwise HELP. Apollonia, Illyria AR Drachm 17.3 mm x 3.19 g Obv. Calf suckling cow. ARISTWN? Rev. Geometric Pattern. APOA APISTWN EPIKADOY?
I own one of these. But to be truthful, the information I have is what the seller gave when I bought it and I've assumed it to be correct. I have no references for these. Illyria Dyrrachium AR Drachm OBV: MENISKOS, cow & calf, Nike flying above with wreath, thunderbolt in ex REV: DYR KAL LW NOS around double stellate pattern 3.22g, 17mm Minted at Dyrrachium, 70-60 BC Ceka 322
I have a few of these. I think yours is Ceka 28, Mionnet 7. ARISTWN APOL FILODAMOU From Apollomnia, Illyria
Not sure I understand it correctly, but this might answer your question scratch... http://www.helsinki.fi/iehc2006/papers1/Petranyi.pdf
"For the relative sequence of the earlier emissions could not be established with certainty therefore I usually number the emissions backwards from the end of production: last issue = -1, penultimate = -2, prepenultimate = -3, etc" So this should be the 6th emission, counting from the end of production ld-guy-smile:
Thanks Batman! By the way Batman, your wide ranging numismatic skills are very impressive. I found these coins exceptionally difficult to attribute. Frankly the entire series looks the same and there is only minute differences in the patterns. I think the legend in this case was its saving grace. Thanks Batman!
