Hey guys, Normally I'm not a modern/mint collection kind of guy but with the 25th ase being such a milestone for the series and the fact that the itch to own one hasn't gone away i'd like to pick one up. Also I have never paid this much for a coin let alone a modern series. My biggest purchase was $300 so buying these at $600 is a big leap for me and I have some questions. First, the fact that they are going for double what the mint offered, $300 vs. $600 I find nuts. So my question is this, if wanted a set is $600 reasonable, will the price increase over time due to such low mintage and this I should grab it while I can or will it actually decrease as the heat of the set wears off? Just overall looking for thoughts and advice on how to go about getting a set? Thanks.
You see a lot of these sets going for between $600-$650 raw, with the graded sets through the ceiling. You could wait for the raw set to come down in price a little more, but I don't think it will fall much. I think this set will always be popular with ASE collectors and that, if you do decide to purchase one, it will hold it's value.
That's impossible to predict. Personally, I wouldn't pay double the value of a product that was released so recently. That seems like the very definition of temporary price inflation, specifically due to the fact that people want to make sure they get their hands on a modern rarity.
Only 100,000 sets and many were broken up for grading. The raw sets will probably stay the same and could increase later on. The thing about the raw sets is that many were picked through looking for 70s. I would make sure it has a retun policy. At this time a graded 69 set might be an option, they were just as cheap or cheaper than the raw sets at one time.
The 2006 20th anniversary set still goes for triple the mint issue price, evidence that the set is still in popularity and demand among collectors. The series itself is very popular among a certain select group of people and while I agree with you that "I wouldn't pay double the value of a product released so recently" (I bought mine from the mint) there are many who will. Time will tell as to whether these sets will go up in value or come back down to earth.
This way to early to predict but I was also thinking I could pick up an extra Kennedy set when/if they release and assuming they sell for a profit in the secondary market use it to help offset the cost of missing the initial release of the ase. The Kennedy is another reason I'd like the ase, assuming I don't miss the kennedy like I did the ase, I'd like to pick one up and think they'd go well together.
GSA Morgans are cracked from their slabs every day and they still don't command much, if any, premium over a raw CC. The mintage is only one aspect of the collectibility/rarity. Time will tell. My suggestion is that if you really want a set, buy it. A wise man once said "I can resist everything but temptation."
I just saw a set in the $700 price range. I say if you can pick up a set for $600.00 do it! I have one myself that is still wrapped in the US Mint Paper never opened. And won't be ...as I have picked up the Key coins of this set in MS-68 for alot cheaper and plan maybe one day to sell my set for a premium......and again maybe not. I searched E bay and other sights for the 3 coins that were part of this set not available any other way but in the set. Yes an over kill somewhat to own 2 coins each of the 3 that were only available in the 25th anniversary set....but now I have an unopened set and 3 graded coins needed in my graded set. I also have found your statement about what's hot and what's not so true....as I tried to sell off some 2008 rev of 07's ASE's and found them hard to sell to a dealer...yup they told me no one is interested in buying them..... well everything goes in cycles....and there will be a day these come full cycle and will bring a premuim. If you need to own the 25th anniversary set buy it if not shop the 3 coins graded buy them and then pick up the other coins in that set for just above melt while silver is still down.
A P.S. to my last post if you don't have a copy of the Book By John M. Mercanhi Presents AMERICAN SILVER EAGLES Buy one! I received one From "Penny Guy" as a Christmas gift last Christmas, and find it as a great source of information on this series. Many Thanks Bill I love this book! BTW Bill had mine signed too!
Ken there's no such thing as" crazy stupid Money" Crazy stupid people yes..... but if you can afford 21K for a coin well you must of done something right.....:luckyguy:
I'll echo Paddy......the Mercanti book is a 'must have' for all collectors of silver eagles. Aside from the fact that mercanti designed the reverse of this coin you will be amazed at the number of coins/medals this former chief engraver has brought into the world.........
My Bad this is for one set sealed box not 5 as you asked..... Here Larry one on e bay unopened set $1105.00 http://www.ebay.com/itm/2011-25Th-Anniversary-American-Silver-Eagle-5-Coin-Set-Still-Sealed-From-Mint-/251270835012?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item3a80e8ab44 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-2011-25TH-ANNIVERSARY-5-COIN-SET-AMERICAN-SILVER-EAGLE-UNOPENED-SEALED-BOX-/221001147303?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item3374b1e3a7 Another for $879.95
The only one on Ebay that actually sold, that I could find, went for $3000. That's $600 each. Looks like I waited too long.
That's the way I would go about it if I were in the market for one. I would venture you could put a set together cheaper buying 68/69 NGC graded coins, cracking them and put them back in the OGP you can buy on the bay for 15- 20 bucks.
Larry I think not as I sold 5 sets @ $750 each durring the craze....that said You're still ahead of the game....and again sooner or later they will be in demand everything goes in cycles and if not for the US Mint not limiting the sets to begin with,..... the craze to begin with would of never reached the heights it did....as when you sell out of an item in just 4 hours you are creating the monster GREED! Plus the Mint really got a lot of grief for doing what they did.
