    Hey Guys,

I posted this coin in the US newest acquisitions thread (just where i usually post all of my new coins, even though its the incorrect place for it)

So now I was wondering if anyone can give me any history on the coin, where it originated, its value, etc. I dont really have the resources or know where to look for this piece. I like that these were what our dollars were named after, but as far as use, denomination break downs, etc, im lost.

I was also told that NGC only had one that graded higher (so pretty close to Top-Pop on this one) and would like to know what that one graded higher is, as well as what PCGS says for what they have graded.

Any help or insight would be much appreciated.

    Thanks again guys!

The denominations are 1/4Taler, 1/3Taler, 1/2Taler, 2/3Taler (also known as a Gulden) and then Taler. During the time period of the coin you posted, there were Talers in larger denomination of 4T, 6T, 8T and these larger denomination Talers were up to 100mm in size. There are also smaller denominations like 1/48Taler, 1/24Taler and 1/6Taler. The coin you have posted is a very sought after design, but I have not researched the background on the design, so sorry I can not help you out on the history part. The 1/4T, 1/2T and 2/3Taler's are very hard to find in mint state grades, as they were more commonly used for day to day commerce than the larger and heavier full denomination Talers. That is why you can find more Talers in high grade than the 1/4, 1/2 and 2/3Talers. It is always nice to see one like yours that has no file adjustment marks. I thank you for posting your coin, as it now puts me in high gear to start looking for one.

Krause lists the coin at $175 in VF, $375 in XF40, and $800 in MS60. Take those values with a grain of salt.

NGC population is 2 coins. Yours in VF30, and one other in AU53.

As best I can tell, the PCGS population is zero coins.

Remember, there are many many many world coins not graded by PCGS and NGC. The populations for coins like this form USA TPGs say little about the availability and quality of those coins that are out there and available.
