So I'm thumbing through my cash this morning to give my daughter lunch money. I notice a couple of the bills have an older design. Upon closer inspection of one I discover that one of them is 1953 $5 silver certificate. Obviously not worth much but still a surprise to find none the less....and it's in decent condition.

Always nice to get a surprise. I picked up a similar note when cashing my check at the local TD Bank. Not as nice as yours, but I can't bring myself to spend it.

I'm surprised at how nice the bill is considering the age...I wonder if someone had held onto it and then finally spent it being desperate or something.

these notes likely haven't seen a bank in over 30 years. As soon as they do, they'll disappear forever

Fantastic find! I've never had the pleasure of getting a silver certificate from circulation.

Not necessarily. I've trained some tellers to look out for things and hold on to them (for me). Once I showed them a few large size notes, they were hooked. I doubt any of them would send them back to the Fed now.

Great finds. I rarely find $1 silver certificates anymore. Used too alot in the 80s.

The cynic in me says Grandma had it stashed and when she died, it got spent by kin...many folks just don't look, except at the numbers in the corners. It's just a fiver to them...two thirds of a pack of Camels. Sigh.

Maybe I should go demand my silver...lol. It would get me a silver quarter...thats about it. I think in the 50's silver was under 4 bucks an ounce. If you only knew then what you knew now...I'm sure a lot of people are saying that... I wish I invested in some gold and silver right out of high school(2002)...could have made a little bit.

Interestingly, it seem that there has been a large influx of older bills like this $20 in this picture.
