Size of dollar coin must reduce in oder for public to accept it.

  1. Not only that, but most western nations as far as I know use a 20 cent (pence, etc.) coin instead of a 25 cent coin. I wouldn't give up the quarter for my life, though.

any type of dollar coin will be sucessful with the elimination of a dollar note.

Most cash registers have 5 bill slots and 5 coin slots. If we eliminate the half and replace the $1 with a $2, there will be 5 coins and 4 bills (50's and 100's are usually put in a drop box of some sort), and a space to put those couple extra rolls of change.

IMO the post that said we will be a cashless society soon was probably correct. Coins will go first then bills will follow. They have already experimented with implanted chips in NY bars that are scannd as you order drinks. Debit cards are already old technology and too easy to lose or steal. An implanted chip is the wave of the future. I wonder what mint mark my chip will have?

Does anyone have the size of the new dollar coins yet? What size airtite is it going to need? Something standard I hope.

Make the dollar coin in the shape of an Elvis figurine. That would solve the problem..

In view of the Mint's official pronouncement:
I'm willing to go out on a limb and predict a diameter of 26.5mm :)

Maybe another dumb question. Will these coins have the P, D, and S (Proof) mint marks like the Sac dollar? I think these are going to be highly collected coins and I want to make something to display them. Something really nice and I need to know how many spaces to make in each display.

Yes. And maybe silver issues too.

Size is not the problem. Canadian loonies are the same size as the US dollars and circulate freely with no problems...because there is no paper $1 bill.
Millions of vending machines have been built or retro-fitted to take the new dollar. A size change is not going to happen.

Funny, this weekend at a coin show I got a silver certificate in my change.......only a collector or a dealer could do that.

Sometimes I have to carry many ones for business...I dont want to carry many coin ones when I can just use a nice foldable dollar bill...bills need to stay but I certainly will use a dollar coin when I can to put it in circulation...I plan to pick up some for collection and some just to use...but I want to keep the dollar bill without doubt. people will complain when they starting getting a bunch of coins as change from multiple purchaces and the bills just fit a nice wallet.

Oh...and I would like the dollar coin to be nice and large oddly enough...thicker than a quarter and at least a bit bigger... :)

Half dollars in change, hmm. Does a local merchant saving them for me count?

The last time I actually received a half as change was in June of this year. The Old Fort gift shop in Mackinaw City, MI always gives half dollars as change. Must be an old tradition with them because as long as I remember no matter what I buy, I always receive one or more.

Yeah, and I'll brass plate quarters so they will pass for dollars. (You can't have two coins of the same size with different values of things like theis WILL happen.)

A common prediction for the past 35 years or more. (I do think it is getting closer, but I doubt if cash will ever be done away with completely.)

That's pretty close to what we already have. The dollar is a little larger in diameter and about 150% the thickness.

Agreed. Would they cry an moan if they had to carry a dollars worth of quarters? I seriously doubt it. But a dollar in quarters is 22.4 grams, a dollar in dollar coins is 8.1 grams. And they ALWAYS ignore the fact that there is no reason to ever have more than one dollar coin in their pocket. Why? Because two dollar bills exist.

Sorry, after the results they had with the Wal-Mart distribution of the Sac dollars (95 million distributed in one month compared to the 5 million that the Fed manges to distribute) the government has said that they won't use that method again because they don't want that kind of failure again. (Failure? Yes they consider it to be a failure because the coins were mostly hoarded and not circulated. What did they expect? A new never seen before coin, for the most part only give as change with most stores refusing to sell extra coins to customers, and customers commonly being told that it was only going to be done for one month. All of these would tend to convince a layperson that these coins were going to be "a limited issue, and possibly rare" so naturally they hoarded them. If they had done it for the whole years and instructed them to tell customers "sure you can have as many as you want" It would have helped convince them they were common and not worth saving . So they would have spent them and gotten them into sirculation!)

As to the Post Office, they are getting rid of the stamp machines so that sourse of dollar coins is going bye-bye.

No, ONE! If you ever get more than one dollar back in change for a purchase the change can always be a combination of notes or notes and ONE single dollar coin.
$1 Sac $2 two dollar bill $3 Two and a Sac $4 2 two dollar bills $5 five dollar bill $6 Five and a sac
$7 Five and a two $8 Five, two, and a Sac $9 Five and 2 twos.

Since people DO prefer to use paper, if you discontinue the dollar note the $2 bills WILL increase in circulation use.

A dollar of the current size will also be successful with the elimination of the dollar note. The key to the dollar coins success is not it's size, but the elimination of the dollar note. The IKE dollar would have succeeded if the dollar bill had been eliminated.

What kind of business? And could it be done with a bunch of twos and just a few dollar coins?

I think that if the gov. made the dollar coins the size of the ikes. or the old silver dolllars they would be more accepted. Iam tired of dollar coins smaller than fifty cent peices amd a hair larger than a quarter. lets get back to a real dollar coin. :eek:hya:

I reckon that America should take the New Zealand & Aussie route - discontinue the $1 & $2 notes,& replace them with $1 & $2 coins.Canada has already done this.
