This coin is from 1796 and I have no knowledge about it what-so-ever. I was hoping someone could educate me a bit about it. And possibly a value. (sorry for the bad pictures ) -Kyle
GreatWalrus is correct on I.D.ing this coin. I too cannot figure out which KM# is it is. both look the same. Italian States/Papal City States/Bologna facts/info on KM#340 1769 10 Paoli (Scudo) denomination, weight 29.0000g., metal .833 silver values: VG-$60.00 F-$100.00 VF-$150.00 XF-$225.00 facts/info on KM#339 same as above values; VG-$60.00 F-$85.00 VF-$125.00 XF-$200.00 I would guess your coins grade at VF-XF. just guessing. you need the 18th century pros to help you out on the correct grade for your coin. a very nice coin. where/how did you get it ? This, formally, is not a Papal coin, because the ruler is not Pope Pius VI (1775-1799), but the People's Government of Bologna, established in Bologna on June 23, 1796, after the armistice between Napoleon and the Papal States, for the will of the popular assemblies held in St. Petronio (the most important church in Bologna), that wanted a republican government. The People's Government struck in Bologna silver "Scudi da 10 Paoli" in 1796 and 1797 in three different types: your coin is the third type (more common than the other), but I'm not able to identify by KM number, because it seem's to me that pictures of KM 339-340 (I have third edition of Krause 1701-1800) are both of a coin of third type, in different varieties (different varieties exist for third type). All coins were minted in Bologna, without mintmark. People's Government of Bologna was dissolved in July 1797. Nice and important coin :thumb: petronius :smile
Going by the Davenport Book, it would be KM #339 or Dav. 1359. This coin has the larger madonna, new city view design, no tree and no exergue. The major varieties will be changes in the city view and punctuation. Another variety is in the legend on the obverse in which BONON. or BON. being used.
Thanks for the help! I bought the coin of of a man that said he got it from a WW2 vet that bought in when he was fighting in the war. I think that it is pretty how it made its way back to the U.S.! Thanks spirityoda for the prices and petronius for the background. regandon, as you mentioned about the BONON or BON on the obverse, my coin has BONON on the obverse, i dont know what variety this would make the coin. Yours is the common one with BONON, but the BON variety does not bring much more money. On another note, you have a coin that is very much sought after do to the historical time period of its mintage. The coin you have is not seen much in high grades, and I have not seen many for sale on the open market.
Thanks again! Would anyone suggest sending it in to be graded. And if so, sould i send it to PCGS or NGC? I dont know which is better or if they are the same for grading foreign coins. -Kyle
This is the Scudo of first type, KM341 (picture from web) Compared to your coin, the date is in Roman numerals (MDCCXCVI) and on reverse, in exergue, is the legend BON.DOCET. Regarding the grade, your coin is good for a coin of plus than 200 years. For me VF-30. petronius
