This sounds like an Isle of Man halfpenny from that year, there should be an eagle and a cap with a baby in it - the crest of the Stanley family. Those are really more "coin" than tokens as they were officially issued by the Manx governing authority.
Yea I just figured out yesterday some better white settings, I will post pictures of them all when I get a chance mlgdave
Heres some pictures. I will treat these with Verdi-care in the next few days (or should I not do that with CW tokens?)
Wow! Nice tokens. I like the US tokens, but they are a bit pricey. I have been buying a lot of Canadian ones though.
Sounds like a nice group of tokens. I suspect the Broas Pie token is another Civil War token, and not from 1794. I suspect that D.B. Packard was related to W. & A.J. Packard, also issuers of Hardware & Iron theme Civil War tokens from the Warren/Youngstown area. Mapquest can not find a West Greenville, PA, but Greenville, PA is only about 28 miles from Warren, OH, so the two merchants with the same surname and line of business were not that far apart, so this short bit of history may also apply to your token. I know the Warren, OH area Packard descendants had businesses that evolved into manufacturing the Packard automobile, with the Packard Electric Company remaining in business even today. At one time Packard Electric was a division of General Motors, but was spun off some years ago along with a group of other divisions to form DELPHI. DELPHI is an acronym using the first letter of each of the divisions, with the "P" representing Packard. If you like, post photos of each of your tokens, and I will be glad to id them and provide rarity ratings for them. Some of those merchants have some rare varieties.
According to Jim Forte (postal history), the Post Office at West Greenville operated as follows; that is not to say the town did not continue to exist after its Post Office closed or merged. West Greenville, Mercer County (1828-1868)
Wow! Really nice group. Congrats! I really like the history behind these. Thanks so much for posting them. :thumb:
Thanks Doug, West Greenville may have merged with Greenville. At least they are/were in the same county. There is also an East Greenville, PA, but it is several hundred miles further to the east, so I don't see a connection to that city.
Some nice CWTs . Your Thomas White with the pig is an R-7 if I'm not mistaken . If you have active verdigris I highly recommend Verdi-Chem . I used it on a MS Monitor token with a couple small spots of verdigris , and it still looks great . It didn't change the color and the verdigris is gone and hasn't returned .
I have verdi-care, I havent had the time to do anything with these yet, but R7 huh? Very cool if thats the case! I will do some better piks and post them when I can, im buying a new high $ lense for my Nikon d90 mlgdave
Nice group of tokens. I'd hold off on the Verdi-Care unless you have active vertigris that requires it. Copper generally doesn't need anything preserve it. Look into picking up a copy of "U.S. Civil War Store Cards" by George and Melvin Fuld, to attribute your tokens.
Bill made a good point , like I said in my post but didn't say it boldly enough , the key words were "If you have active verdigris" . If you don't have any verdigris it's best to leave coins alone . Also there are 2 different products one is Verdi-care and the newer one is Verdi-Chem . I'll leave it to Thad to describe the difference .
