Hello, saw on PCGS website when you submit coins for grading they don't accept coins in acrylic cases. So if I wanted to get a proof set graded I can't send the coins in the case they are in I have to take each coin out? Anyone know?
If you're submitting all the coins in the proof set, I'm fairly certain you can submit the coins in the government packaging. Then again, maybe that only applies to GSA packaging and Eagles.
Unless something has changed, government packaging is okay, but I believe they charge extra if you want the empty packaging returned.
If it's a modern proof set you are wanting to send in, you may do very well to buy the coins already certified by PCGS and save yourself the expensive proposition of certification.
Both NGC and PCGS say that you must submit coins in flips. But, they will both accept coins in original govt. packaging like Proof sets or Mint sets etc. They will however charge you $1 per coin extra for removing the coins from that packaging. And they prefer that you don't do it at all. And to the best of my knowledge, no you cannot get the original packaging back. That said, what Tom B just said is your best bet. If you want a modern coin slabbed, buy one already slabbed and save your money.
Sorry Folks, but in the OP, I read "acrylic cases". I've never known, or heard of anyone referring to OGP as "acrylic". It's always just plastic and PCGS will readily accept proof sets in the original government "plastic". On the other hand, folks do refer to the Capital Plastics holders as "acrylic cases" which is what immediatly popped into my head. PCGS will not accept coins in "acrylic cases" even though they are easily removed using a screw driver. Perhaps if the OP could be more specific he would get some advice he could actually use. Acrylic Cases = No OGP Plastic = Yes
