Ok here is what I know so far about this coin I dug this up metal detecting last weekend . It is a 1944 penny it does not have a mint mark of D or S. I only washed the dirt from the coin no other cleaning. The Penny is an odd color kinda pink looking. I weighed it and it weighs 2.8 grams. It does not stick to a magnet. It is noticeably thinner than other bronze 1944 cents. I weighed another 1944 cent I had , it weighed 3.11 grams. All the research I have done so far makes me think I might have lucked up and dug a steel 1944 EXCEPT for the fact that it does not stick to a magnet which makes me wonder if this is a 1944 struck on a foreign planchet. What do y'all think? The cent in question is on the right the penny on left is a regular 1944 cent for comparison. I am interested to see what your ideas are !
Not having a mintmark means it was minted in Philadelphia. It is most likely underweight due to environmental factors such as corrosion. It is unfortunately NOT a 1944 cent struck on a steel planchet. It is simply damaged. Keep up the hunt!
Ahh thank you for your opinion non cents .. A girl can still hope though until I take it to a pro I won't give up on the ole rust bucket .. I am just interested in what everyone would think of this as its the first pink one I have unearthed! I appreciate you sharing your thoughts with me.
Hope all you want, but a steel cent that doesn't stick to a magnet isn't a steel cent! Why do you ask for opinions if you won't accept well-grounded opinions based on scientific fact?
It is just corroded, I often find wheat cents like that. I think it just depends on the soil conditions it is in.
I just said I am still going to take it when I go by the coin dealer . I don't not go to the doctor based on people's opinions. And I do want to hear what other people thought about. I'm it sorry if me wanting to have someone actually look at the coin and still having hope offends you. I'm a glass half full kinda chick and not a Debbie downer thank you very much. Just because I say I have hope doesn't mean I discount anyone's opinion. As you see I kindly thank you all each time when someone gives their opinion even if they come across as rude so thank you for yours also. This is all a learning experience for me also. And I happen to want to take this advice in this column as well http://www.coinweek.com/us-coins/19...ent-sold-at-recent-fun-has-interesting-story/ "The moral of this story is two-fold. First, there are great, rare coins that have yet to enter the market. Second, it is always highly advisable to seek the counsel of an experienced and knowledgeable dealer like Mr. Estes if one has a coin that could potentially be very rare and valuable. As always, do your research and find a dealer who knows the type of coin you think you have, and look for someone like Mr. Estes who has a reputation for honesty and integrity." And if then I am told its not valuable thats when I will be satisfied and content.
Thank you I.cutler ! This is the first one I have dug that looked like that, see information like that is helpful to me. I appreciate you sharing your experiences of digging some that have that same look with me
