the first pic shows what other state quarters pretty much look like. the part where the tail is touches, and it appears to me to be hair on the inside of the ear. in the 2nd and 3rd pics there is a space at the part and a void in the ear. anyone know what this is, and if it is considered an erroe? ty in advance
Assuming that there weren't any design changes(I'm not familiar with Quarters) then it would be over-polished dies. These are shallow areas of the die and are easily polished away. Same thing as the three legged Buffalo Nickels. Sometimes design elements being polished away can make for an interesting coin, but they are minor errors and in most cases carry little or no premium.
ty for that tid bit of info. i was reading about a kansas city quarter with an "unbraided horn" that was suppose to be worth something. if they generally carry little or no premium why is that the 3 legged is? is due to the multiple times things happen on the state quarters? die chips, struck through grease, etc?
As for the three-legged Buffalo, people find it interesting. A lot of people will argue that it's simply the product of normal US Mint procedures, and therefor shouldn't even be considered an error. It's just one of those cases where collectors jumped on a band-wagon, and the rest is history.
