Turreted head of Tyche on obverse. I can make out LAODIKEWN on the reverse, but that's all I've got. Various searches have left me empty handed. Any thoughts? Seleucid? Pseudo-autonomous?
Yes, a pseudo autonomous issue of the late 1st century BC / early 1st century AD. The date in the civic era should be on the inner left of the reverse.
The arrangement of the reverse, which I assume is also Tyche but holding a cornucopia, is similar to that of the Seleucid coinage. I looked for a match but couldn't immediately find one. I agree I also read LODIKEWN in the left field. That is almost certainly the location. Judging by the size and shape of the letters I would suspect late Seleucid.
nice one! i just figured out how to date these today, how cool. http://www.parthia.com/parthia_calendar.htm
Nice coin, JA ... Oh, and awesome link, chrsmat!! (it's always cool to learn something ... now I can relax for the rest of the day)
This coin is more confusing that I thought. Evidently Seleucus I Nicator named five cities Laodicea after his mother. I'm guessing this is the one the Romans later called Laodicea-ad-Mare, the modern Syrian city of Latakia?
hey JA, i hope you don't mind if i jump in on your thread...but i just got this seleucid coin and this lead to to to date/calendar link above... was trying to figure out what that EOP was on the bottom.... antiochocus vii obv:eros revs:headdress of isis EOP in ex. (year 175 SE, or minted oct 138-sept 137 BC. antioch mint
By all means, jump in. I know very little about the Seleucids, but I gained a general overview searching for some sort of reference for the Laodikian.
