Hey Guys- A friend wants me to sell these and I'm thinking they should be slabbed first. Any thoughts on value and/or which TPG for this series?
Thanks Chief. I'm looking at the PCGS grading guide and all the MS have no rim ridge, but the AU 58, 50 and XF 45 seem to have a similar ridge at 12-3... Based on the guide, I'm thinking it's XF... or MS64... or somewhere in between!
Isn't one of the diagnostics for the weak D variety something with the rim? Definately both should be slabbed - would be much easier to sell.
grading these is hard, get the tpg opinion too much spread in a point not to do so. This is the key to the series, something like 55k were made, (how many melted over the years?) Were I selling they would be ms 65 and ms 64, were I buying they would be vf30, xf40 damaged.23000 dollar spread between 45 and 64.
Gold Indian $2-1/2 and $5 are HEAVILY counterfeited. Some of the counterfeits are so good that, even with the coin in hand, they are hard to detect. You should be VERY careful buying these coins unless you are buying them for near melt.
Thanks for the replies. Anyone else want to weigh in on diagnostics? I'd pay for the grading if they're obviously faked!
The PCGS grades are in. Anyone care to guess? Hints: Both are real and apparently, both are a "Strong D."
I would take a guess in the mid to high AU range (AU53-AU58), not MS, but I am no expert when grading 2.5 Indians as they are a very challenging series to accurately grade, especially by photo's, unless they're Mark Goodman images. I hope they turned out great on your end though as they are very nice coins. I would be interested in one myself if I was buying early gold right now. Wait! That just depends on what you're asking...lol I apologize for the double post.
I got him $16K for the pair. I was worried that I gave the buyer too much of a discount for cash but both parties seemed happy. I saw another 63 just sell for 13K so I guess the price was about right.
