Host coin is a 2 Piastre of Tunisia. AH1290, KM#147a. I believe the counterstamp is KM#165 http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/Wo...ory=115114&worldcoinid=295706&FromSearch=true http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/Wo...ory=115151&worldcoinid=295816&FromSearch=true
Thanks! The coin is 27mm in diameter - how do you tell it apart from the 4 piastre? http://www.coinfactswiki.com/wiki/Tunisia_ND_c/m_on_AH_1292_4_piastres I wonder why the counterstrike was used. Was there a tax placed on circulating coins or something like that? Also, what would you grade this piece? I'm still learning about how to grade counterstruck coins - do you primarily grade the counterstrike or the host coin? Also, I found an unrelated article on the smaller Tunisian "dime sized" coins that was very interesting reading: http://www.dewardt.net/dimebook/Tunisia.pdf
