Franklin Half Guidance

Ok, I need a little help figuring out what the difference is in these 3 Frankin listings on Ebay. I'm just starting out with this this series so I'm trying to educate myself a little. Other than the obvious difference "48D" these three all look great. Could someone explain why the difference in price? I need to get my eyes trained to look at these coins....

I personally think the priciest one of the bunch has less contact marks in the field which was a big pet peeve of mine when I was finishing the set. The least expensive one has a nasty looking bell that I wouldn't want in my collection. These were just initial impressions from only a quick glance. When looking at the defining characteristics of the series, check out the depth of the curls around the ear as well as the bell and its trusses. If it makes you feel any better, I have bought several of this seller's halves and highly recommend him...there was only one where the picture was least representative of the coin I received.

yes I see exactly what you are describing. I know about the bell lines but didn't know about the ear curls. I have heard nothing but good about this seller. He will be how I go to when I start. He seems to have the nicest examples on Ebay and comes highly recommended by a few CT members. Thanks For your Help!!!

LOL, Actually I'm not buying any of them. As I said, I'm just starting out with this series and I'm on the learning curve at the moment. I know there are Franklin collectors here on CT and I'm just tapping into their knowledge.

I believe the third coin on this list is the best coin. Nice strong luster, minimal contact marks & a strong detailed strike. Also a fair price for a 48 issue. This seller has many outstanding franklins & most of his coins are strong examples of the year & mint.

 

I also see the bag marks you are talking about BB. I'm not sure if I want to do a proof set or business strikes either. Coins with all that field space can be a challange in reguards bag marks on business strikes I know. I'm actually kind of torn on which way to go on that question. If I get a chance I'm going to post photos of the Frankins that I currently have and maybe get some feedback on those as well.

1066, good luck with this. I'm slowly picking up Franklins here and there and have to admit I saved this seller to look again at his items for sale. I would go for the 2nd or 3rd, not to excited about the first one. Looks a little beat up but it's hard to tell from that photo. I do like the bell lines on the 3rd...

 

I agree Paul, how is your collection going, any real problems with finding them? Are you doing proofs or B-srtikes? Do you have any photos?

 

There's a whole "Post your Franklins" thread in the U.S. Coin forum. Mine's going very slowly, I buy only occasionally, more on a whim than anything else, if one jumps out at me.

The only difference I can see is possibly one of the "L's" in dollar on the 48d look to be different lengths?

I think I've gotten most my raw silver UNC and silver proof quarters from this seller. He had a 1934 Washington greased filled die ( 1 was greased ) I picked up for 15.00. I've been very happy with the coins he's sent me so far. I'm tempted to buy that 48 D for my raw UNC Franklin collection.

 

Doug- Are you thinking that L has splitting in the serif? I can't tell if it's the picture, lighting, both, or true doubling?

edit: yea, that's mechanical methinks ... also can't find any listing with those PUPs in CPG and on wexlers...

 

I like the 48d too. No worries though if you want to buy it go for it, I have no intention of picking any frankilns up just yet unless it's one of those "cant pass it up" deals. If you buy it I would like to see the photos when you receive it though!
