I just started roll hunting today and this is my first post but i'm not new to coin collecting as i always knew i'd get something out of it (although i also never really knew the worth of some of my coins). anyways... Does anyone know why the normal 1988 penny i have owned for years is plated in gold? It's just a normal looking penny with a "D" under the date (i dont know if that makes a difference). No other differences from the normal pennies. Is it rare or just some guy thought he'd be cool with a gold penny? thanks for the help.
Welcome to the forum! Most likely it isn't really gold, but a chemistry experiment done in many beginning chemistry classes. http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemistryhowtoguide/a/goldsilverpenny.htm It is possible someone did plate with gold, but the reasons would be their personal knowledge. Jim
I saw this like a year ago. you change change it to gold or silver with any penny.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_g_ml8tAnWE
Yeah, that looks pretty similar to the one i have. Whoever made mine did it pretty well then because it has an almost bullion like shine to it.
