    Hello everyone,

I was watching coin vault with my dad yeatersay and he got on the subject with me of what i liked and what i wanted for x-mas. Well i really didnt know! I like all of the nice eagles and gold coins that they put out there but i dont want to get something that is 50000$$! So without breaking the bank, what could i ask for, Iam just starting to think about asking for some indian heads to jump start my collection, and i was wondering if anyone had any ideas?

You do NOT want to begin your collection by ordering something off Coin Vault. Their stuff is ridiculously overpriced.

Most of the lower-denomination coin series from the 20th century are fun yet inexpensive to collect. Wheat cents, buffalo nickels, and mercury dimes are all very fun to own and they also have history in them (and the Merc dimes are made of silver - an added bonus). Franklin half dollars from the mid 1900s are also very interesting and popular but will cost a little more. I would say that most collectors start with wheat pennies or buffalo nickels and branch out from there...I know that's how I started not too long ago.

Whatever you do, do some RESEARCH before you begin spending money on coins. The Red Book (about $13, available at dept. stores, amazon, hobby stores, etc.) is chock full of info about pretty much every US coin there is. But most importantly, HAVE FUN while collecting!

Why not Morgan Dollars? it's amazing how inexpensive a lot of the dates can be,even in AU condition and they'll impress your friends a lot more than ugly old Indian Head Cents (no mail please..LOL).I put together a complete date set in less than a year without going bankrupt. When I pull out that album, even the people who have ZERO interest in collecting anything but dust get eyes as big as saucers.(hint:don't do this at parties)
But seriously, collect whatever rings your bell.

Personally, start a set of Barber dimes. Except for a couple of semi-key dates, and the 1895 O ($400 trends) you can put together a really nice set in full good (full rims both sides) for not a lot of money.
The semi-keys don't break $100 each in good, in fact, only the 1895 P, 1901 S and the 1903 S list for $85 each, all others are far more reasonable.
And they are showing a nice price appreciation.
    Whatever you select, good luck.

You mentioned Indian Head Cents to jumpstart your collection. That's a very good starting point and you might consider Lincoln Cents, too. Some of the Indians can be expensive.

Anyway, without knowing how much your father plans to spend on you, here's an idea you might consider: You'll have the rest of your life to collect coins (and finish any Indian Head Cent collection you might start now). Ask your father how much he plans to spend on you. Let's say it's $200. Ask him to use $100 to buy coins for you (but, not from the Coin Vault TV show). Then, take the other $100 and buy toys for underprivileged children (you can find these children at any juvenile shelter in your area).

Make sure that both you and your father shop together for the toys and that you deliver them together to the shelter.

When you open your gifts on Christmas Day, your coin collection will only be half of what it could have been, but there will be a place in your heart that a few extra Indian Head Cents could never fill.

The morgan advice above is very good. Peace dollars are about equally good. I generally tell people to buy me either an American Silver Eagle or Canadian Maple Leaf one ounce coin. They are inexpensive, easy to buy at any coin shop, and don't require any expertise to choose. I like to keep things easy for people.

It's Dansco #7172,titled "Silver Dollar Date Set" which has holes for each date of Morgans,Peace,Ikes and SBA's..any date you want.Mine are mixed mint marks, whatever was cheapest and looked good.:rolling:
So my advice to peter is,find the coin you want to collect, buy the album FIRST...then fill it.It worked for me on all of these:

I vote for IHC - all of the other suggestions are fine also, I just like IHC better than morgans, etc. About the only real expensive IHC's are the 1877, 1909-S. The semi-key dates can usually be had for less than $75 in plain old good condition. GO IHC's!!!!! :)

I vote for the morgans and peace dollars. Nice coins at affordable prices. gee my spelling has become awful in my old age. not that it was ever very good.

I agree, you can get a complete Peace $ set without breaking the bank. A Morgan $ date set can set you back on a few of the dates.

    Bruce,
They also have holes for one additional Morgan from each of the 4 Mints.Good luck with that CC..LOL...I just threw in an extra "O" to fill the hole because my only CC in in a GSA holder. There is also one other hurdle, the 1893-1895's which can be seriously pricey even in G-F grade.I've posted my "terrible three" before so I won't do it again but at least they have character.

I just collect whatever I like and buy the key dates first, just bought my 1928-P Peace Dollar the other day, research the coin and buy the album first of course, proof sets also make nice gifts and most are very inexpensive. Thats what I buy for children I know for a gift the day they are born.

I've got that album too, still filling in the holes. As mentioned, the tough ones to fill are the 1893-1895 Morgans, the CC Morgan, and the 1921 Peace dollar. The 1903 Morgan can also be a little bit more tough, but not that difficult. I've gotten all the hard coins done for mine, just buying the easy ones as I find ones I like.

Also, a complete set of Peace dollars isn't that easy. The 1928 coin can set you back quite a lot.

    Wow! Such Feedback!

Hey thanks guys, I took all of your advice into consideration and Iam teetering on IHC and Morgans/Peace. I like the morgans and i did like the statement that Mikjo0 made "the set will amaze your friends." So right now iam real close to going on the Morgans-Peace. I loved the pictures that Mikjo0 had and i want that for myself, something to be proud of. I will let you guys know what i get for christmas, happy holidays to all and i hope everyone gets a good coin, everyone deserves one!

    Thanks!

Oh so many new collectors ask that question. It always reminds me of people that say which is the best car to buy, what is the best TV set to buy, which is the best doctor to work on me, where is the best mortician, how much should I spend on my teeth or a casket. All such questions are really personal and regardless of what you decide, remember if you don't like what you decided on, it is you who will be the sorry person. So read up on what you like, check out forums like this, check out ebay, go to a coin show if available.
However, if after all that you can not make up your mind, just mail me some money and I'll buy myself something really nice.
