  5. Wow. While I'm happy to hear AU, I must admit I'm a little taken back by the cleaning. I mean I've seen whizzed coins in the past but this one does not appear to be cleaned. I'm hoping the pictures are just washed out. Maybe I should try some direct sunlight photos?

Try natural light for the pictures, the color effect may just be the lighting.
    Still, an AU.

The pics aren't washed out, they're quite good I think. It's the overall look of the coin that leads us to think the coin has been cleaned. See how the light reflects from the higher points of the devices but not from any of lower - a sure sign it's been cleaned. I would say lightly polished.

  8. Thanks for the in depth answer GD.:thumb: Please don't misconstrue my questions for being stubborn, I'm just really hoping this coin doesn't have the stain of being cleaned.

After I get done with my Christmas decorating today I'll try some new pics. I really think the light is playing tricks. The coin does look a bit different in the photos than in hand.

    Thanks again all,

    Michael

Try taking photos where you are not directly reflecting the light off the coin and into the lens as this will give a more natural appearance to the photo.

I agree that it looks AU with some of the wear I see - good pictures will help. From these it is really hard to tell if it was cleaned. So I bow to the experts on that.

AU details and cleaned. Little 'scratches' from polishing running in different directions are a reliable indicator of cleaning- and your coin appears to have them.

  13. Hey 09S-V.D.B,

Just so we are on the same page, I have always valued your input and your knowledge. So I am merely ask questions at this point to further my own understanding. Capice.:thumb:

Can you give me markers of the scratches so I can examine more closely? Obv or rev? Are the scratches tale tell on all coinage or copper only.

    Thanks for your help,

    Michael

I'm saying whizzed mainly from the picture of the obverse. The whole left side appears to have 'hairlines', especially directly to the left of Liberty's cheek. As GDJSMP pointed out, the light reflection is another indication.
