Check out what the heck is on abe's forehead! got home from work, love the night shift--ugg. Anyways, is this a Lam peel? It shows the same amount of wear as his cheek. You know in the hair line looks like a die crack, but I am just a student. Gotta love the pennies!! thanks for you help and comments....
Not a lamination, actually. It is a large die break that is well-known for this date. Keep up the hunt!
I hate to belabor the point, but here is a thread that depicts a very similar coin. It is a die break. These examples can be tricky, but I have seen plenty of them in-hand and they all appear to be die breaks/cracks. http://lincolncentresource.net/forums/showthread.php?t=23729&highlight=1955+lamination
we'll agree to disagree. as RLM stated: I am curious. How do die cracks make lines incuse on the coin? Granted, cracked skulls are common in that era, but those lines definitely look to be incuse to me.
Those lines aren't incuse. It's not merely a die crack. In this case, the die has broken and what you are seeing is vertical and (probably) lateral displacement of the nearly detached portion of the die. This is a garden variety die break that was prevalent on Lincoln Cents in the 40s and 50s. I've seen hundreds of them.
Yes, what Jody said. The cracks wre not incuse. I am not seeing them incuse on the above picture, but maybe you are. You get used to seeing this one after you've seen dozens of them both in-hand and online.
