I have seen a handful of wrong labels in my years, and they are actually quite collectible. The most dramatic tend to be the wrong coin all together. I personally haven't seen a wrong grade from the big four, but wouldn't be shocked if it happened.
Here is yet another reason to "buy the coin, not the holder". That coin might grade VF-25, but it has zero eye appeal (at least to me). The coin is hideous, almost black, and you have to look closely to even identify it!! Instead of VF-25, it should be graded "BU" (Butt-Ugly!!)
What say we cut to the chase. How about - do they make just plain mistakes on grades ? I think you know my answer that - not only is it yes it's *%$# YES !! But ya know what ? It is also my opinion that they make far fewer mistakes re: grades than the vast majority of dealers I have met in the past 40 some years. And they make far, far fewer mistakes than about 95% of all the collectors I have ever met. Bottom line - we are better off with 'em than without 'em
Regardless of the grade, circulated 1894 Philadelphia's are trading at a much higher price than 1894-S's. Forget the "price guides", they aren't even close. To say that this is simply mistake, made by a low-level employee, is fine, if indeed true, but it is a mistake that could wind up costing someone a lot of money, especially those that believe these things can be traded "sight unseen". Is this your's, GD? Pretty good. LINK
Guilty your honor Thanks No argument about what the mistake could mean dollar wise. Think of the difference between an MS63 '21 Morgan and a MS63 '21 Peace But that is my point entirely. Such a mistake would not be made by the grader. It's a typo - plain and simple.
satootoko, GD, ND, and rbm86, I believe we have all made very good comments on this issue. If nothing else is gained from this discussion, besides the fact that we have all had cause to "think" a little, then our time was well spent. Although we may not always agree on every point, of every issue, it's always a pleasure to hold an intelligent conversation with you all.
I use SEGS, especially for varieties; sometimes PCGS for "normal" coins. I formerly used ANACS for the varieties-for 10 years or more, but I've found SEGS grades better and has much better customer service and now use them exclusively for variety coins.
