    Hello,

I am new to this forum, I am not 100% sure about this being an error. I could use your expert opinions or best guesses..It looks to have had a problem with the metal, to me it looks a little wavy/blurry & at the date it looks real bad, missing metal ?? .. Is this an over-date gone wrong or something? I am adding photos.. IMG_20130416_034741_0.jpg IMG_20130416_034758_0.jpg IMG_20130416_034849_0.jpg IMG_20130416_034815_0.jpg IMG_20130416_034933_0.jpg

    Thanks,

    Seth

It looks to me like someone might have given your coin an acid bath. It doesn't look like a mint error to me, more like PMD (post-mint damage).

I agree with Collector1966 on the PMD, but I feel its been hit with a ball punch. A ball punch is used to tighting up clearances on drilled holes, for bolts and such. It mushrooms the material. It also helps to determine why the rim is flanged out, rather than flanged in.

How do you know it's an 1888 with it so badly damaged?

Looks like it used to be an 1898 before someone obliterated the digits.

  9. It may have been used as a teething ring for a very hungry indian child.

looks like corrosion and possible find with a metal detector. The "A" in America has some corrosion pitting probably from ground exposure. Liberty is fairly visible so I guess it was lost soon after it was made. whoever found it took to a wirewheel brush. I've done the same thing on nasty coins I've found. they get the same kind of look. But not old coins like Indian Heads.
