1883 no cents Liberty Nickel - strange reverse - What is it?

My friend's grandfather left him a couple hundred Liberty Nickels when he passed away. He brought them over for me to go through, and I found an odd 1883 no cents Liberty Nickel. It's a pretty rough coin. It very dirty, and has some obvious signs on cleaning, but there was something on the reverse that caught my eye. Something that shouldn't be there. It looks almost like little ribbons on the wreath. I've attached some scans for you guys to look at. You can't see in in the picture, but the one on the right has two letters in it, looks like "L G". Please tell me what you think! Thanks!

Probably solder. The coin may be a former jewelry piece. In any case it is damaged.

 

I agree with Amish Hobo. The remnants of gold plating are another indication of being a former jewelry piece. That is unless it is a racketeer nickel of course.

 

Why do you hate squirrels ?

 

Squirrels did a tremendous amount of damage at my father's house. I first discovered them in the attic. They had chewed the insulation off a lot of wiring. That is a fire hazard. I repaired that myself (taping the wires with electrical tape) - at least the damaged wiring that I could see. They also destroyed most of the insulation on the ductwork (especially the flex duct) in the attic. Not to mention the peeing and pooping and packing down of the insulation.

After the house fire in the attic (caused by the cleaning lady, not the squirrels) I discovered they were not only living in the attic; they were also living in the walls. I found six locations where they built nests inside the exterior walls. And they were living in the soffits. They had moved a ton of insulation from the attic to the soffits along with pine straw, wheat straw and other bedding material. I also found many more locations where they had chewed the insulation off wiring in the walls and soffits.

The squirrels lost their cozy place to live when the house burned. In the meantime some of them have relocated to the attic of the shop / garage behind the house. (I have photos of them coming and going if you are interested.) I am rebuilding the house and I am installing hardware cloth to keep the squirrels out.

That's why I hate squirrels.

 

I used to love them till they started messing up houses I take care of. I'm now an expert at getting them out of the attic without killing them while they are still in the house.
