The first 3 half dollar Fed boxes I got were basically square with brown text. The rolls also had brown text and there were 2 rows in the box. The box I got today had yellow text and yellow roll text. It was a more rectangular box with a single layer of rolls. Is there any significance to the different types of boxes and roll text colors?
If you are talking about boxes of coins from your bank, the difference in packaging is probably because they came from two different armored car companies. The Federal Reserve Banks do not distribute coins to individual bank branches and do not roll coins. They distribute coins by the palletful to armored car companies (Brinks, Wells Fargo, Purolator, etc.) who roll and box them and fill the orders from their own bank or commercial clients such as Walmart, Target, etc.
I understand. Thanks for the help. Out of the first 10 rolls I found a 1969-D and a 1970 Mexican 1 Peso. Slightly smaller around but made it in with the halves. First foreign coins I've found in half rolls.
Where did you get that information ND86? And, of course, a special procedure that may be used in the future for the special issue Deadprez coins isn't relevant to how half-dollars have been packaged in the past.
I wonder what they are going to do with the piles of unwanted sacs? Probably send them to Iraq for them to use
That's how the Sacs and SBAs are rolled, so it's logical to expect the same for the Deadpres Dollars - but can we really expect bureaucrats to be logical?
ND86, I am a little slow on understanding this and it has been driving me nuts lately. I am waiting until 12 1 06 for my bank to change hands so they can order me a box/bag of $1000 halves. I don't know which to ask the bank for. I would prefer it if it came directly from the mint undistubed as a whole. I don't like the idea of the depository institutions opening the box and pouring them into a bag or something. I am also wondering... if it comes originally in a box, are they in rolls in the box? It would be nice if when the bank orders box/bag from the federal reserve that it comes to me like they got it, but I have this unnerving suspicion that the dang bank will open them up just to run them through a dang coin counter and then keep the box and pour them into a bag and give the bag to me to search through. I have been waiting for a while now to get these from the bank and I just don't know what to expect or to ask for. I want to atleast act like I know what I'm talking about when I speak to the bank person in charge of ordering from the fed. Thanks. ps. I do realize you were referring to different coins, but was hoping the same would work with half dollars. Tom
Tom, I've just been through this myself. When you order them from the bank, they order them from the Fed and their armored car company delivers them to the bank. Typically, this is done in boxes of 50 rolls. There would be no reason or sense for the bank to open the box or bag up. Your best bet would be to go in and ask a customer service rep if they can order half dollars for you. Don't feel that you need to explain why or lay it out for them. Just ask them if they will get them for you. If they are willing, they will tell you whether they order them in $500 boxes or $1000 bags. Either way, the delivered coins should be sealed. The boxes that I have gotten of any type of coin have always been closed up and taped just as they arrived from the armored car company. Good luck. It took me two months to find a bank that was willing to order the Half Dollars for me, but it's a small town, and there's little want for them.
Oddly, no. I had accounts at 3 different banks, and none of them would order the coins for me. Then one day I thought about asking one of the tellers at the bank in my local grocery store. She jumped right on it. Two weeks later, she had the box for me. That was about 2 weeks ago. I've been getting rolls and boxes from them for a month now, and never once have they pressed an issue about opening up an account. So, this week I opened up an account with them.
Dabalzak, I've had the same results as Check_M_All. All the FED boxes I have gotten have been sealed. I just ask them to get me $500 in halves, and I have received either a FED box or hand rolled coins. I have had about equal luck with either type.
Check M All, Thanks for that info. It makes me a little less hesitant about the situation. 2 more questions if you don't mind. 1. How long from the time you got them to order them did they let you know they were in? 2. What did you do with the ones that you didn't want to keep? Thanks, Tom
It was about one week from the day Kristen told me she was placing the order until they arrived. Ahh... the 49XX coins that you don't to keep... Well, I promised the bank that ordered them for me that I wouldn't return the unwanteds to them. They liked that. So, I cashed most of them in at one of my other banks. If you have accounts with more than one bank, this will work. It's pretty easy to setup a small account at a different bank for this purpose. Use the debit card from the new account just for something like buying gas. Take your halves back to them, put some in the account and take cash for the rest. If your bank has more than one branch near you, you can take them to a different bank. CoinStar is an option, but it'll cost you about $45. Of course, you could always spend them too.
Am glad this subject came up, especially Tom's. I did not know how to go about getting rolls other than asking for the small amounts. Do you ask for say 1k in a certain coin? (Not the name but the coin amount.) Do they ever give a mixed bag or box? Do I ask for from the FED?
You ask the bank for a box of whatever denomination you are looking to search. Typically, they have plenty of boxes of cents, nickels, dimes, and quarters on hand. Half dollars typically need to be ordered as there is no demand for them in circulation. If you are looking for a sealed box, then that is what you ask for... a box of _____. They will tell you the amount. Generally, 50 rolls/box, so $25 in cents, $100 in nickels, $250 in dimes, $500 in quarters or half dollars. You don't need to specify "from the FED" as any sealed boxes they have will have come from the FED through their armored transport service.
