Can anyone help me identify this mark right beneath the second N in UNION? The coin is a 1949 French Oceania 1 Franc. The mark, under magnification, almost looks to be a tulip, or a flower of some sort. I haven't been able to find another one to refer to with this mark. I assume it is a die variation, but I need some expert opinions. Thanks.
Guess that is what Jedimetals was trying to do. There is a link to some attachment, except that link does not work. By the way, nice matching avatars. Christian
Christian thanks for noticing that. he has a very cool off-center 5 mark. very cool must have costed big bucks ??? I'd love to have it for my small Germany 5 mark collection.
If you click and zoom, you should be able to see the mark pretty well. And yes, real men have sailboats on their pajamas! Haha
https://picasaweb.google.com/102169...BelgiumDutchItalianEmpire#5498687465942137954 No tulip on mine. I think your mark may be a wing. From Lucian Bazor the engraver.
There is a wing mark, but it's to the right of the date. And the cornucopia on the left of the date. That's what had me baffled. I spotted the mint mark and the designer mark, but then I saw the third mark. I have no idea what it indicates. I am 100% positive it is not some kind of pmd, and as far as I know, there is nothing French that bears this mark. But it is there, nonetheless. Im stumped.
hi Jedimetals. just off work. I AM NOW LOOKING AT MY 2013 1901-2000 Krause world coin catalog. my 2013 does not show the picture of the 1 franc. I am house sitting at my parents so I did not bring my older earlier years catalogs with a possible pics of your 1949 (a) mint (Paris mint mark). the info I do have is: KM#2 1949(a) 1 Franc 23MM size mintage- 2,000,000 values F-$0.20 VF-#0.35 XF-$1.00 UNC.-$3.00 BU-$6.50 they have a "ESSAIS" section of what I am guessing might be the pattern section: KM#E8 mintage 2,000 value $35.00 and a 2nd section called "Piedfort with ESSAI" double the thickness of the coin KM#PE3 1949(A) 1 FRANC Mintage- 104 value $90.00 I will get back to my place tomorrow to see my other older world coin catalogs to see if they have your coins picture and to see if I can see that what appears to be a seagull bird mark ?
I have another question about this coin. Even though the designer is Lucien Geroges Bazor the signature is G. B. Bazor. This compares with a signature of L. BAZOR on his French Coins and G. B. L. Bazor on coins of the Equatorial African States. My guess is that the G stands for Graveur but I have no idea what the B stands for. Does anyone know what the G. B. in this signiture stands for?
Not sure but Bazor used various signatures: Apart from the wing (mintmaster sign) you find L.BAZOR, L.BAZOR GB, G.B.BAZOR, G.B.L.BAZOR, maybe even more. According to this page his name was Georges B Lucien Bazor. Don't know though what the "B" would be ... Christian
