Hi. I'm totally new to this group, and a total novice I'm afraid. But I'd like to get people's opinion as to whether a 1916-D mercury head dime I'm thinking of buying is real or fake. I'm hoping it is real -- I'd like to buy it to complete my collection that I made 57 years ago when I was 14 years old! Anyway, the dime is listed as certified by PCGS and graded as G06, but the image that accompanied the listing didn't show it in its holder. What do you think -- real or fake? Here is the image:
Looks fine to me, if your concerned ask the seller for a picture of the slab. If its on eBay they are required to have the full slab pictures Welcome back to collecting and Welcome to CoinTalk
I agree Yes, and you can also look-up the slab number on the PCGS Website when you know the slab ID#.
Thanks very much to everyone who replied to my post. With the reassurance I received here, but still with some trepidation I bought the coin. It seems to be just fine. The coin I received was the one pictured, and despite not being shown in a slab, it did, in fact, come in a PCGS holder that is genuine, as far as I can determine from "how to tell blogs" on the internet. As "Collect99" suggested, I checked the slab ID# and the description on PCGS's website matched the one on the holder. My "Mercury" dime collection is now complete! I'm not too worried about the genuineness of the rest of the coins because they are all less valuable than the 1916-D and because I collected them over 55 years ago when faking coins was probably a lot less common. Oh -- I should mention, I bought the coin at PQ Dollars, which I would highly recommend. Steve Twitty there was very personable, professional, and easy to contact and speak with on the phone.
Congratulations on completing the Mercury (Winged Liberty) dime set. :thumb: I really mean it. :thumb: . . . . . What are you going to collect now?
