    Hi everyone:

I need your help with my 1958D Washington Quarter. It appears that the 5 is punched over a 7 ??? and possibly the 8 punched over a 9 or 2 ??? Please look at my pictures I posted and help me. The close up pictures of the 5 and 8 is through a 60-100x magnifying loupe that I attached to my iphone. Any information would be very appreciated. Thank you so much.

I don't think they'd have dies with 197X back in 1958...could be wrong though

I don't think they have 197X dies back then either. Could it be a planchett from a silver quarter from 187X?? Far fetching I know...but how can it be explained....

If that was the case it'd be a seated liberty quarter overstruck with a washington quarter, or a seated liberty quarter from 187X reworked for some reason 80 years later for a washington quarter. This does not make sense.

In regards to the images, sometimes when you're looking real close like that, the dirt and blotches can play tricks on you and make you see things. Also, if you add to the fact that sometimes you want to see things, it can lead you to seeing things that just aren't there. I learned that the hard way thinking I had a 1942/1-d overdate mercury dime when it was just mechanical doubling.

I would caution that this is just my opinion and I am not an expert, there are a lot of smart people on here when it comes to errors and I'm sure they will chime in if they see something I'm not.

I see what you are talking about in the 5. Could it possibly be a well placed die crack?
