I just purchased this Morgan Dollar and it has some sort of damage. I've taken a couple close-ups. Does anybody know what has happened to it? Also, if it were to grade at MS64 without the damage, hom much would it drop based on this mark? Thanks, Steve
It's not graded/slabbed. That's just a plastic holder. I'm thinking about sending it off, but wanted some opinions on how much it might be docked because of the damage. MS64 was my guess, not taking the damage into consideration.
This kind of damage is common on modern Chinese fakes. Probably because of beaten, all messed up dies they use. If this coin got no luster, as it seems from these photos, its authenticity is rather questionable.
Thanks for your help. I'm trying to put together an Ngc graded complete set... 3coins from complete. I paid about $1800 for this. Dealer called it a planchet flaw. Do you think they'll slab it if I send it in (ms)? The dealer will take it back otherwise.
Plenty of swollen heads on here... Maybe not the right forum for a guy like me. Just looking for "help". You're a cutie though.
A little touchy are we? Swollen head? It was a joke on eBay because of how over priced some coins go for. It wasn't a dig on you or your coin. And you got the "help" you asked for. Try not to take the internet so seriously. A sense of humor does wonders for the soul.
Well, if it is real, and that's a planchet flaw, $1800.00 probably wasn't too bad a price. If it doesn't grade, it still would carry a premium, as this date is tough to find in MS. I've seen 63s go for $3,000 plus. I assume you were joking about the $30.
A coin of that magnitude should already be in a top tier slab if it was going to slab... Especially after being in a dealers inventory... This tells me that it probably won't holder as problem free... Someone has to have tried already.
Can't tell from images if it would slab as problem free, and I won't grade a coin higher than AU from images, especially computer images.
I agree, it could be a planchet flaw. But even a planchet flaw, when severe enough, is cause for a coin to be determined a problem coin. And that one is pretty severe. Thus my opinion.
