There is a coin coming up in my city and it's the first one since I've been here (about 12 years) and the second one I will ever have been to. Since I was able to find out about it in time I was able to plan and am pretty excited given they are such a rarity for me. My question is how do y'all handle your spending money at a show, do you take $500 in cash with you (which can be dangerous) or find an ATM in hopes they have one? I'm just trying to adequately plan cause it's very rare I get a chance like this to see such selections in hand.

Going to the coin show, I bring all the cash I plan on spending. Make as few stops as possible that may make you vulnerable. Travel schedule should be simple as this if you worry about danger:
Get your cash, go to show. Stay in show until you are ready to leave. On your way back, don't make stops except if you are hungry, I suggest using a drive-thru fast food, but be sure to go to the bank on the way home and deposit the remains. It will ward off anybody who have ill intentions because they'll think you put your purchases in a SDB and money back in the account.

Basically, as few stops as possible. Straight there, bank and home.

i carry a few hundred in cash and my checkbook. i've been around long enough that most dealers know me and I have no problems using checks. if it is with a dealer I haven't done business before I can give him references from the other dealers or I make it out for a little more and have him ship it when the check clears. My biggest problem is many dealers want to extend me credit. "Take the coin and send me two or three payments" I could get seriously in over my head if I did much of that.

Cazkaboom, I don't know of too many banks that are open on Saturday afternoon or Sunday.

I guess when youre the bigger guy in the room, too many people arent really willing to mess with you physically, and in case anyone ever feels 'froggy' around me and ready to jump on me, well lets just say theres a little bit of steel and hot lead for backup purposes.

that's me most any day. I take a lot of cash to coin shows and don't worry about it. I take some coins also. sometimes I sell/trade to a dealer. sometimes to others at the show.

I haven't been to a show yet where the dealers didn't accept debit cards. Thats a lot easier, and safer than carrying around a bunch of cash.

Another quick question. Do they tend to show everything up front on day one. So kind of a burst come first serve or will they display different stuff the following day. It's a two day show so again I'm trying to establish if I should go both days, how long, ect.

I go in with a lot of money and my loaded concealed 9mm or .45 depending if i am feeling frisky that day. Make sure that if you travel out of state that your state concealed weapons permit has reciprocity with the state you are traveling to. It is good to do some quick looking things up on google. I don't leave home with other either one - money and lead.

I've not been to that many coin shows, but I have been to other events where cash is required. What I do is carry my cash in different spots. Let's use your $500 as an example. I might have $100 in my front pocket (not in my wallet) and another $400 in an envelope in a money belt under my shirt, or stuck in my sock, or somewhere else. In other words, when I stop to make a purchase, I'm not pulling out a wad of $20's and pealing off what I need. When I need to replenish my "pocket money" I will go into the restroom or somewhere else private where I can move funds from my money belt into my pocket.

Sounds like a good idea to me. :thumb: The earlier suggestion (walk into a bank etc.) may well help too. And if we are talking about this show, well, that is on Fri/Sat ...
