Hi Everyone, not been on for a while as been on my Roman settlement on my land. Just found this little gem. It is as found as I do not clean coins unless full of mud then i only use distilled water. The coin is a Diocletion coin which I think I have id right. Obv. IMP C DIOCLETIANVS P F AVG radiate and cuirassed bust right. Rev. PAX AVGGG Pax standing left holding palm branch and transversed sceptre. S-P accross fields MLXXI in exergue . London 287-293AD RIC VII (Carausius) 10 rated Rare. Weight. 4.53g Diameter. 22.16mm. I thought at first it was a Domitianvs or a Pacatian, my heart was in my throat as eyesight up close not good and reading glasses brokrn to shreds by standing on them. But still a nice coin.
Nice Diocletian! I want to make sure I understand you correctly....you're finding these LRBs on your land!?! Ahhh...The advantages of living in the Old Country. That must be so much fun. You've got your own personal treasure hunt going. Please keep us posted on any future finds your diggings may turn up. Well done my friend...well done indeed:thumb: .
Great Story... Read this resent thread on a Maximianus, same issue: http://www.cointalk.com/t226092/ Interesting Issue... Make sure to take extra care of this one
I'd like to hear a bit more about this roman settlement and how you are going about recovering these artifacts. Great find!
.... Not very good at spelling words that look similar... And the suggestions from spellcheck while writing doesn't help (I had written recent... then used the suggestions because the spellcheck said did you mean 'resent'...)
Great find. Nice coin. I have a relationship with a UK metal detector club where I help attribute coins they find. I enjoy the identification of the coins, but they also send pictures of the sites and the locations of their finds which makes it even more interesting. I would love to hear more of your findings and perhaps see some images of the site. Are you metal detecting? What method are you using to mark finds and insure uniform coverage of the area? It is exciting to think you own land with an ancient settlement.
Great find and exactly the coin I have been seeking as mentioned in my thread linked by Wildchild above. Considering these were made in the UK we should not be surprised that you found it but it is still a coin with special history. Now get back out in the field and find the triple portrait version! These also come from the C mint (Colchester, I believe). I have not found the Diocletian or Maximianus from there yet.
I am using a CTX 30/30 with built in GPS so every find is logged for the Finds liason Officer, Have had 2 Carausius and some really nice Ae3's one a VF and EF Magnentius, also one complete iron lock , and part of a lead system or lead coffin with herringbone design and a phalic symbol on it. Will post pictures if you guys want to see them. But not tonight as my wife taking me out for my birthday. We think this could be more Military site than anything five bags of pottery phew I just love the Roman Empire. And the field is not mine its a friends but I have sole permission. I wish it was though. See you later guys . Best Regards Mick
the only thing i've found on my property is dog turds. that is an awesome thing to find on you land...VERY cool.
Your land or where you have "sole permission" makes little difference. Personally, I'd like to see the details of the finds. Maybe we should organize a CT British Isles trip with the focus being on days at the site helping you metal detect. We can all stay at your house and eat you out of house and home.
Ummmah, sure? ... but Scotch kinda clashes with the magic mushrooms!! => just jokes (but I did grow-up in British Columbia, where those babies grew in my front yard ... maybe that explains some stuff?)
